Definitely sounds like the ignition switch to me. Too much power (for the headlights in particular) goes through the switch and the solder joints fail as a result. It is possible to remove and disassemble the ignition switch, re-solder the wire and get going again. However, you will have to remove two "tamper-proof" screws. This can be done in several different ways, but you will have to replace them. It is probably best to replace them with regular metric screws or bolts.
The problem will return if you don't divert the power for the headlights from the ignition switch. There is a kit made by Eastern Beaver which will do that. It is pretty much plug and play. The hardest thing is explaining to the spousal unit the credit card charge to Eastern Beaver.
