I was running 11.5 In the 1/4 and low 7's in the 1/8th. I was running with full windshield and saddle bags just for fun but I expected more grip. 30 runs that night so plenty warm enough and all that.

You shouldn't be all the way on the sidewall. There's tread all the way over the side of the tire. I'm pretty sure if you hit sidewall, you're going down. To answer your question though, the transition from flat to edge isn't really a funny feeling. There's just a constant struggle to keep it off of the flat spot where it wants to be.
