I've done 142 miles today on our trike visiting Southport, and when we got home I give the rocket a oil and filter change. I'm worried because when I looked at the old oil there was metal particles floating about, our Rocket as only done 2500 miles total, does anyone know if this is normal with the engine and gears using the same oil.
I would have thought that the filter would have caught these particles, Why didn't Triumph fit magnetic drain plugs.
Has anyone else noticed this.

Thank you.

John.

Pictures?
Metal particles? Shavings don't typically float around, but you can cut your filter and see what you find.
How many changes have you done since new?
I would expect some in the first couple of changes.

Thanks for your answer, The bike as only done 2,500 miles total, Had the first 500miles service last year supposedly by Triumph dealer, and Today I've done the second service 2,000 miles later. sorry no pictures as I've tipped the old oil in a large container with other used oil from my other vehicle services.

LMG did a good write up of similar issues in his. Magnets only catch ferrous materials. Warranty still valid? - It's NOT GOOD

Hi Plug and sorry to hear about this. Barbagris is correct - I too have had this (recently). Look here:

I was out of warranty and Triumph did f*ck all for me so with a little help from mates, people on here, and a cheap update kit - we resolved the problem ourselves (f*ck you Triumph). Hopefully your in factory warranty - if so DEMAND the full update kit installing in your motor. If your out of warranty, you can try Triumph but id wager 50p that they wont do f*ck all for you.

If you need a hand in anyway, drop me a pm. You aint far away.

Thanks guys for the replies, Yes Triumph voided my warranty because of the trike conversion, The original dealer Stratstone Triumph told me that the warranty would be ok when I told them that the bike was being triked, after the 500 mile service, but they lied to me, (nothing in writing).
The rocket is 2010 model, would it still need update kit.

John.

Ps Leigh thanks for the offer.

What is its manufacturing date? Usually shown on the head stock or on the v5.

If its an older bike but with a 2010 plate on it, then it may need the kit. If it really is a 2010 bike then it should be good.

Hi Leigh, the vin No is SMTTLC4035A431001 on a Rocket 3T, this has got me really worried in case its the trike conversion thats caused this problem, if so it will happen again.

John.

I'm sure others will wade in but what I understand is that the "issue" was around the torrional output shaft bearing being installed the wrong way round. This "issue" was a assembly fault on some bikes up to and includng '08 manufactured bikes (at least whats been reported). I personally have not heard of a R3T with this issue, but that doesnt mean they havent been susceptable to this issue - my 2005 (silver engined) R3 standard is fine, but my 2006 (black engined) R3 standard had the TDSU issue.
