I went to interstate today and bought a new battery. This is my first sealed and pre mixed battery. The box says pre charged at the factory. The guy at the counter said I should top it off as it likelyy has lost some charge. I hooped it up and it tuned the motory maybe twice and nothing. I've got it hooked up to the trickle charger. Is this normal or should I ask for a replacement battery.

It should be charged and ready to go. Check that your connections are clean and tight. If you have TuneECU or TuneBoy, or a volt meter, you can check the voltage of the battery and the voltage drop when you hit the starter button.

on another thread some one said that he would never buy a battery that was ready to go because you don't know how long it has been sitting on the shelf. i agree with this, buy one that you have to put acid in so you know it is fresh.
it takes a lot to start the rocket. i was stuck and had to buy a walmart bat. i filled it with acid and a good Samaritan
charged it from his car for about 30 minutes before it would start. so you might be good after it charges over night on the trickle charger?

Scorpion Battery 320 CCA best I have used yet except for the 600 CCA Lithiium I have in parallel with it. enough to pull a 30 foot trailer with the starter :D

You are running dual batteries ..yeh? Im up for a new battery as removalists stripped the thread on the Odyssey I had in mine .. which do you reckon is the best single battery for a standard RIII.. thanks.

Kblahetka, Your thread subject line is correct; you have a 'dumb' battery there. I know, my humor doesn't help, but since the real mechanics seem to have the honest answer already, I might as well be the comic relief...

A voltmeter is a few bucks from any auto store. Get one and check the voltage across the terminals. You should have one in any case.
You should not have to top off the sealed battery. That is BS.

Don't know how I missed this. Like everything else on these bikes, plenty of people like to deride whatever Triumph put in them originally. I still have the original battery in mine - Yuasa aren't they? - and it's working just fine after 4 1/2 years. I did have some issues starting when it was sub zero and left outside but eliminated that with new terminal bolts and a slightly longer daily ride distance. I think if your bike isn't ridden all the time battery selection is more critical and some will hold their charge better when idle but as you'll be on yours most of the time I'd be just going to a battery or bike shop and getting whatever the listing says. Use it or loose it!
