I've searched the posts here that reference removing (lifting) the tank. They said to remove the "allen head bolt" under the "gauges". However, I removed the bear claw with the display and there is no allen head bolt (or any other bolts). There are however, two Torx head screws, one on each side of the ignition key slot that appear to be used to secure the front of the tank. The Torx head screws appear to be 4 or 5 mm.

Are these Torx head screws what I need to remove to lift up the tank and place it on the rod? If so, what size are they?

Thanks for any help with this.

Do you have an R3T??

If so, then yes there are two torx bolts that have to be removed. The Standard/Classic instructions are considerably different due to the different gauges and tank.

AH, just saw the title of your post. You do have an R3T. Remove the torx screws and as you lift the tank you will see a prop rod attached on the right side under the tank. Pop it out of its retainers and use it to hold the tank.

Thanks for the help!

Pretty straight forward as these things go.

Remove the sissy bar, if fitted.

Remove the two side panniers.

There are three hex key bolts to remove the seat: 5mm on the tail, and two 6mm on either side.

With the seat removed, the hinge at the rear of the tank will be exposed.

8mm bolt head on one side, and 10mm nut on the other: loosen.

Remove the instrument cluster with its three fasteners, and carefully lift, raising just enough to reach under and disconnect the instrument harness. Set aside.

Remove the two aforementioned torx bolts on either side of the ignition lock.

Locate the stand rod that should be clipped to the frame just under the tank on the right side.

With the rod in hand, lift the tank from the front flange, and insert the straight end of the rod into one of the holes from which the torx screws came, and the keyed end of the rod goes into the corresponding bolt hole in the tank flange, propping it for whatever comes next.

Removal of the instrument cluster is not required - you can just turn it around and set on bars than lift tank.

My two cents....use some electrical tape and tape the rubber seal in place on the base of the chrome instrument cluster. It makes putting things back together way easier than fighting the seal trying to keep it in place when setting the cluster back down on the tank. You don't want to scratch your tank.

I believe the bearclaw needs to be removed to raise the tank.

I used weather strip cement to attach the gasket to the instrument cluster. Makes it easier.

Yes, the bear claw has to be removed before you can lift the tank, it interferes with the air box otherwise as it wraps around.

To sum up: step 1, remove bearclaw, step two, remove the seat, step three, remove the instrument cluster (flipping it up on the bars seems foolhardy - it's only one connector underneath it, squeeze and pull and you can put the no doubt super-expensive instrument panel somewhere safe.) Finally two torx bolts up at the front of the tank, then lift.
