put in a new clutch new lifter pin new clutch cable put it back together like I have a few times before but I feel things just aren't right. I have to use vice grips to get the dots even close to lining up.... feels like I might break it. then it seems I have to adjust the cable out to the max. when I squeeze the clutch it feels easy enough.

Are you backing off the cable adjusters first to slackened the cable, then putting the lifter arm onto the lifter shaft with the dot lined up to the arm's slot?
Even disconnect cable from arm to help.
Then adjust cable back in so you get 2-3mm free play on the cable sheath up at the lever

I used to unbolt the 2 bolts and let the clutch cable bracket loose off the engine too to help give the slack necessary to line your dots up.
Hydraulic clutch these days
