Is the 2017 model restricted or not?

I don't think the cam timing is restricted. It's the ignition timing that is restricted in the touring model. Changing the tune, exhaust and intake will give it everything that the roadster has. Changing the tune alone will be quite impressive over the stock tune.

What @LOFTYBOB was saying is true Triumph put in super soft cams which further restrict of for want of a better word strangle the motor holding back a lot of potential power

Even if Triumph have deactivated the secondaries from closing during the last 30% of throttle opening in the 1st and 2nd gears, these bikes are heavily restricted in the cam timing and air box restrictions.

That is why it is so easy to get another 30 RWHP out of them with better filters and a re-tune, not a flash, a proper tune by a reputable tuner on a Dyno.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but what is "a proper tune" the ECU has a map written in it ...that map is not adjustable ( or is it ? ) without loading another map or 3rd party software or third party hardware so my question is how does a reputable tuner go about giving any engine " a proper tune" on a stock ECU without a new map or 3rd party products and if the cam timing restricts 1st and 2nd surely it would also restrict 3rd 4th and 5th is the cam timing not fixed on a R3 ... its not a fancy Honda engine ..BUT I would agree removing the stock air filter make a world of difference as for the rest I'm not sure

But those softer cam make the motor more usable and give the monster torque at low rpm's if it had wild cams you would loose the torque and gain revs and get the peaky characteristic of a sport bike engine which is what none of us want and why we bought a Rocket in the first place ...I like "soft" cams

Yes the map is adjustable. With TuneECU it's only $20 for the cable, Tuneboy is more expensive, but can get you an extra 2000 rpms. A tuner who knows how to use either can get you more power without a Power Commander, or similar device.

Hotter cams don't necessarily make the low end unfriendly. With my 265 hp package the bike is still very calm below 4500 rpms, and will walk away from sport bikes when you get into the power band. She's the best of both worlds now. I love my bipolar b!tch!

Some of us like feeling it going harder then ever as you pass 5000,6000, 7000 rpm. Starts leveling out about 8000 rpm though.

The stock Rockets have more lowend than you can use in the lower gears so the modded engines give you plenty of power in the lower gears at low rpm but give you a superstrong top end rush that you can use whenever you want to blastoff and beatup on the competition whatever it may be

I pretty sure all the touring models are restricted. Dump a @HansO tune in her and off you go. Night and day difference.
