After running for a bit today, I happened to glance at my analog oil temp guage and noticed that it was at 200 degrees farenheit, just 12 degrees below boiling temp. I kept an eye on it but it never went down even when taking it easy. Just wondering if this is the normal setting for the engine temperature.

Chuck, FWIW guys who race/track vettes see contiuous 250 degree oil temps (which is why it is synthetic from the factory).

I think modern synthetic can take near 300 degrees. FWIW Syn Oil doesn't even burn off impurities from condesation etc. untill 200 + degrees...

Temp gauge

I also have the Analog Temp guage, and mine seems to run between 180-200, that appears to be the normal range, and like they said... with synthetic oil it should be ok.. If the bike gets too hot i think we will hear from the radiator and water first..

Dont know what my rocket runs at for temp, but summer heat here in the desert, I get as high as 228 on my speed triple at stop lights. During break in it actually made the light come on at about 235. Thats when you gotta start worrying.

oil temps

right 200 degrees not a problem for synthetic oil.. the normal operating range appears to be 180-200 degrees, im in fla and thats where mine runs.. if it get too hot the water will start to boil over.. and you'll know it.

The hottest my rocket has reached is 210 F,Thats in 3 diget temp's in city traffic,It does not mind the heat, will just idle forever no problem,Me I was sweating like a pig in the heat.

I'm pulling this back up for further review by Chuck & others.

FYI, the Rock has superior cooling and oil systems, and with the advent of Tuneboy temps can even be reduced further through fan control.

I know our oil temps of 190-210 degrees F and continuous jaunts to 250 F are well within normal synthetic specs. Most syns claim to provide spec lubrication up to 400 degrees F (with a flashpoint 470F). And if your oil temp goes over 300 degrees F on a Rock, I think you have just spontaneously combusted.

Also, FWIW, the moment you get on it throught the gears it will raise your oil temps 10-30 degrees immediately-especially on top speed jaunts. Sitting in traffic puts no load an additional heat like generating full HP at 6,000 rpms...

"This means not only do synthetic oils maintain lubrication integrity, they continue to cool and clean engine components at constant temperatures of up to 180°C (355 degrees F), and can handle short term temperatures in excess of 200°C (392F).

Remember that we are talking of the temperature as measured in the oil tank located outside the motor in the airflow not the temperature of the oil in the vicinity of the exhaust valve in the cylinder head. I bet it gets up in the high 200's there, at least .
