I rode my first "Iron Butt" ride last month on my R3T.
1,040 miles in under 20 hours.
I sent my paperwork/trip log/receipts into the IBA a couple of weeks ago and received notification today that my ride has been certified.
:)

Congrats I am thinking about doing one in a couple of weeks assuming the new tires get put on before hand and I can get some one to ride with me

I have been thinking about doing one for a long time. Quick run to Miami and back should be about right. Only trouble is when I get to Miami am I going to want to turn around and come right back? Depends on how close to the beach I get and whether the sun is out or not I guess.

I was thinking of heading up north but you are not the only one thinking south I just want to do it and say that I have

I-95 all the way. I had a buddy of mine do a coast to coast in 39 hours on his FJR1300 a while back. He had ridden to San Diego to go to recruiter school and ended up not making it due to an injury then rode home to Beaufort. He did an Ironbutt the first day going to Cali and then the big one one the way home. The miliage on the R3T might slow things down a bit and it would tend to spoil the trip trying to just rack up miles. If I get to Miami I want to check out the racks.

Congratulations Darrell, how did you feel the Rocket held up for that kind of distance in 20 hours?

The bike was great. It was my first try at a "Iron Butt" ride and things went very well. Had I waited for warmer weather, I believe that I could have easily done the same ride in 16 or 17 hours. A co-worker rode his bike on the trip. We left around 9 a.m. It rained that morning and we decided to wait for it to clear up which caused us to get a late start. We left Peebles, Ohio and rode to about 80 miles on the other side of St. Louis then turned around and rode home. After the sun started to set, it became quite chilly and we reduced our speed and took longer breaks. We still beat the 24 hour time limit by over 4 hours and rode 40 miles past the required 1000. We rode the first 500 miles in 8 hours. We were hauling ass. I learned a few things on the ride and will be a little better prepared for the next one. Our next blitz will be an attempt at 1500 miles in less than 24 hours. It will be more of a challenge but I think we can do it.
Overall the experience was a lot of fun. I hope to do several more IBA rides.
If anyone is thinking about doing a "certified" IBA ride, you need to check out the IBA website and read up on the certification requirements. It's not that difficult to document the ride. But they do have certain requirements that must be met.

why??????

i don't know but maybe i think like an old man.
by the way I'm only 45.
but how can you enjoy a ride that way?
doing high speeds for that many hours straight.
how can that be enjoyable?my best day was 450 miles
with varying speeds of 45-50 to 75 to 80
stopping to enjoy the scenery
what happened to it being just about the ride??
cruising at about 45 to 50 through winding mountain Rd's
is my idea of a beautiful day.
not hauling ass down i-95 at a 100 plus
if any body wants a nice easy ride rt 17 between myrtle and NY
is a beautiful easy ride.
don't get me wrong i like to open up my bike and play .
Ive maxed out my bike on several occasions
and i toast tires every 5 to 6 k
what you do just dint make sense to me

:)

For sure it ain't for everybody. And actually an average speed of 50 mph will get you to 1000 miles in 20 hours (4 hours under the time limit). So it's not necassarily blasting down I-95 @ 100+ mph. And judging from what you wrote, 99% of my riding is just like the riding that you do. It (iron butt ride) was something I wanted to try and I did have fun. It had a challenge/adventure kind of vibe to it. I'd like to do another IBA ride sometime. But it's just a small portion of the motorcycling that I do.
By the way I'm 44.
