One other thing about your original problem, what can happen is that the contacts in the switch get hot and melt into the plastic. This makes for a situation where the rotating contact cannot contact the lower pin (this can be intermittent). Fit headlight relays before it happens again, you should fit them before you use the bike again.

Yep! Got you covered on that one. :D I ordered the headlight relay kit from Eastern Beaver and installed it a month ago. Pretty easy installation. That is a very nice kit. I am surprised Triumph does not put a kit like that in the bikes during manufacturing.

considering the number of complaints triumph must receive concerning this, the only explanation is planned obsolescence.

Triumph fixed mine for free....

....recently on my 05 model.....have to agree.....why don't they put in a relay?

I'm going to install a relay and isolation switch on the brown wire (headlights) from the ignition switch. Don't need the lights sucking startup power.:D Will link headslights directly to battery with heavier cable.;)

A quick update. Dealer has installed new ignition switch and the bike has been running perfectly ever since. (knock on wood) :kk:

I have installed the EB headlight relay kit so am covered there. Triumph was great in all of this and provided me new set of lock tumblers keyed to the ignition switch. The biggest PITA is figuring out how the lock tumblers come out of the button on the bags. I gave up and am bringing the bike to the dealer tomorrow.

All new lock tumblers are installed. I am back to where I was in the beginning with the exception o fthe problem. Ignition switch has not faltered yet! So far so good.

As an aside, I have 4 extra lock tumblers with keys. Two tumblers are the short ones for accessories (e.g. windhield, backrest), the other two are for saddlebags. Anyone need any tumblers? Send me a PM.

Cap'n Bob,

I have a couple of extra tumblers. too.

The dealer went through and coordinated all of my locks (well, almost all, as my gascap is still a different key).

My switch was replaced under warranty upgrade. But, I think it was failing due to the bad solder joints where the wires attach on the bottom of the switch. Regardless, the switch has been replaced and Wayne Tripp re-soldered the wires. No problems since.

Stripes, If you have an R3T and you have not put in the headlight relay kit, you are not out of the woods yet. It will be the best $50 bucks you will spend. ;)
