Keep looking for the problem if you think it might not be the ignition switch... installing the relay kit at this point won't improve the problem, only prevent if from occurring in the first place.

I have not had a chance yet to take a close look at undertank wiring. However, EB Kit has been ordered. My dealer called Triumph and now wants to look at the ignition switch. I am bringing the bike to them today (assuming it will start! :D).

Regardless of what the dealer finds, I will still install the kit when it arrives. If nothing else, a little brighter headlight cannot hurt.

Well....., It happened again. Went to start the R3T last night, turned the key and.... nothing.

No lights, no sounds, nothing. I checked the plug under the instrument cluster, it was tight. I lifted the tank and looked for loose connecoters, everthing seemed to be OK. In the process of checking connectors, I wiggled a bunch of wires under the tank, Voila! I had lights!

Next time this happens, I need to likft the tank, turn on the ignition, then wiggle one wire at a time to see which one is the culprit. It sure does seem to be a wire connection under the tank. I am also going to check for loose grounds. I am not convinced it is the ignition switch although, I am ordering EB's H$ relay kit anyway.

My guess is the ground, it's the only common for all that stuff.

Quick update......

Dealer looked at the bike and took apart the ignition switch. Said contacts looked OK but cleaned them and coated them with di-electric grease. I brought the bike home and had the same issue the very next day. Turned the key and nothing...., turned the key again and it started up.

I received the H4 relay kit from Eastern Beaver and installed it. Very nice kit, very easy to install, works great! Headlight is brighter then before! I highly recommend it! While I was in the wiring, I check all plugs and connections looking for something loose. Everything looked good.

Last Wednesday (a couple of weeks after installing the relay kit), I stopped for gas and when I attempted to start the bike up..... nothing! no lights, fuel pump, nothing. The horn did work however. ;)

This time I could not get the bike going again, it was down hard. I called the dealer who offered to come and pick it up. Major kudos to the dealer for doing that. I was stranded and had no other means to transport the bike.

It is now Friday and I will be calling the dealer today to see if they have looked at it yet. I checked the wiring diagram and the only thing common to all of the symptons I was seeing is the ignition switch. Hopefully, when the dealer looks at it, it will still be in the "failed" state so they can determine exactly what is happening.

If they do replace the ignition switch I am going to be a bit unhappy with now having to need multiple keys for ignition, bags, and other lockable options on the bike.

Have any of you dealt with Triumph on the multiple key issue? If the ignition switch is changed, do you think I could get a set of matching tumbers from Triumph for my other keyed options? Dealer was not to optimistic about the key issue.

If it's a "warranty" repair, Triumph covers replacing the switch and all the other keyed parts so they match. If you are paying for it it's up to you if you want the whole key-set of locks or just the new switch.

I really see no good reason why you couldn't take the switch apart, replace the bad insides and keep the original keyset as is. Maybe there's a good reason for it, maybe there isn't ... I dunno. Bring back the good ol'days of serviceable/rebuildable components. ;)

Yep! This is a warranty repair. It just happens to be the last month of my two year warranty. Good to hear Triumph has sent out a full key set. I will press that issue!

Dealer still has the bike. and has been unable to find anything so far. And of course, now the ignition switch is working. :( Hopefully they will get it resolved in the next few days. I am thinking it almost has to be the ignition switch. After looking at the electrical drawing, it seems to be the only thing common to the many symptoms the bike is having.

Here's the latest update......

Dealer could not really find anything wrong. They could not duplicate the problem. Triumph says replace the ignition switch, so they did. I picked up the bike today. I also picked up 4 tumblers that are keyed to the new ignition switch. I started to do the tumbler swaps on the bags. Anyone ever swap the tumblers on their bags before? It was not difficult to remove the lock assembly and remove a casting that the tumbler sets in. The question is....., how do you get the tumbler out of the casting? The casting I am speaking of is essentially the button you push to open the bags. The tumbler is located inside that casting. I am thinking it is removed easily but have not figured it out yet.

Anyone have any thoughts?

That is a good thought.

I could not find a circlip anywhere on the casting. It is a bit puzzling. I will call the dealer tomorow morning. Hopefully, they know hoe to remove the tumblers.
