Is this just an 05 thing? I was told there were problems with the 04 engines, don't know if that's 05 model year. I figured I was safe with an 06.

I don't believe any model year is safe. Mine is a mid - 06 Classic and according to the VIN, it had the upgraded lower timing sprocket....I guess the VIN lied.

I'm going to request (and I'll probably have to pay for) the upgraded cam chain tensioner blades as well.

I've yet to hear of a full sprocket, gear, and tensioner not resolving the issure, though I doubt the tensioner is THE problem. The key linking the crank to the sprocket is the failure point, IMHO. CHEAP **** keys get screwed under pressures. The sprocket gets to wobbling and the chain is damaged. Replacing only the gear and key (still likely to be crap steal) and the new gear is beat up by an imperfect chain. Sure we'd much prefer a key replacement than a crank but why not put it together right the first time.

My rattle started out of the blue one day and I put up with it for weeks till we had a bad spell of weather. That's when I pulled the tensioner and heard the cams roll back. Well once I realized what had happened I just started pulling it all apart. Long story short, once I got it all back in time and found no appreciable wear on the keyway, tensioner or chain, I fired it up and the rattle was gone. That was at least 2 thousand miles ago. Never came back. I really think that the tensioner or skid was jammed up.

You have captured it perfectly. Mine did it for almost 10 thousand miles before Triumph replaced the cam chain and sprockets.

From talking with my local dealer mechanics I know that I have done more extensive troublshooting and repair of a rocket3 than they have. When it's time for the chain replacement it will be much easier since all that under tank airducting is GONE! God bless K&N................

Make sure the dealer calls Triumph America down in Ga. They told me that they were covering the "paint can rattle" problem regardless of the warrenty status of the bike. Worth a try.

Talked to my dealer today. They have done the upgrade kit on one Rocket so far. Triumph pays about 14 hours of labor to do it. Of course it took about a week to do it. The bike they did was an '05 out of warranty and it had a transmission issue, 2nd gear I believe.

I'll just leave the whole shebang in Gus' hands. He asked me if it was 'rideable' or not and I said sure. You need ear plugs but that's okay.

Thank goodness for that clip! I thought maybe I had it on my '07 Tourer... but nope! Sounds nothing like it at all.

It rattles, more like buzzes, quite a bit like a failing PCV valve (which there is a recall for on my bike) at about 1400-1800rpm, but ONLY while riding. Won't do it sitting still or in neutral. Not very loud, either. You have to know it's there, or you wouldn't notice it.

I routinely beat warranty time. Of course, it will never run again .

Warranty times as conjured up by car and motorcycle companies are calculated by figuring out how long the job actually takes and making that pay minimum wage. So in the above example Triumph figures that 14 hours times (let's say about)) $18 would equal $252. But it actually takes 42 hours to do it times $6 equals $252. Triumph doesn't want to get hit with a class action lawsuit claiming they don't pay minimum wage. It makes good filler work if there is nothing else to do. Of course, if you ask Triumph they say they have actually done this job in 14 hours. We would all like to see a video of this , if you drink that much Red Bull you will have a stoke.

We once had a Nissan rep tell us that Nissan has a super dooper tech that who will do a warranty job 3 or 4 times in a row until he gets it down perfect. He works on a brand new engine that has never been run so there is no rust or frozen bolts etc, it is sitting on an engine stand, all his parts are pulled and all his tools are laying out in order. No one has ever seen this guy. I spend half my time in parts finding out that the stuff I ordered for the job is all wrong because Nissan had a change in mid model year but there is no parts service file showing that. After I find out I am caller 17 on the tech line I just resign myself to the fact that I am going to go broke on this job and I go up and tell the service writer that the customer might as well make himself comfortable in the waiting room because he's gonna be there for awhile. Probably just like everyone else's job

Sounds like the College where I teach. We have engine after engine on engine stands lined up in the labs in between semesters, all looking real nice and clean, all fully dressed, ready to go. Problem is. There is nothing inside any of them.

Well, maybe a few have leftover garbage, buirger wrappers and empty pop cans, but that's it.

I juust had a bad thought. If GM goes tits up, we loose our ASEP program. That program is a full 1/3rd of the course offered.
