The most important item for visibility is the helmet, according to two studies I've read. Anything bright that draws the eye bobbing around in traffic will get you spotted, often it is above the level of car tops so can be seen readily.

If one thing needs to be visually LOUD, make it your helmet :)

For night time use then you could not go past my full face reflective Lazer Solano Superskins helmet.
The helmet skin has lifesaving brain injury protection feature and is a rubbery latex like material over a special lubricant that allows it to absorb the initial impact rotational force that causes most brain damage without external injury.

The worst colour to wear when riding is black but what is the most common colour that bikers wear?????????? yes sir nobody said we were brain surgeons.:D

Mark my word, when they start making chaps in Hi Viz then everyone will be wearing it- the color, not the chaps

Edit- whoops, too late...

Last report i read on this, is car operators, or window lickers, see club colours and police bikes at 200m, the rest are hard to pick!

In some areas black does stand out though, some of the bright multi colour stuff blends in to the surrounds.

I must admit some of my gear to include my rain coat has dome reflective piping on it. I do also carry a reflective vest in case its really foggy out. Well that and the requirement to able to ride on a military base. If my coats ever wear out I probably switch. Considering I'm still wearing the gear I wrecked in (leather) and its held up great over the last 12 years. I imagine it will be a while before I make the switch. Now a helmet that will hapen sooner.
