Gearbox

How was the shiming on the the 3rd and fourth gear output shaft side. One pictured above is 4th. Both 4th and third on the out put shaft are floating gears with bushings and on the 2011 R3T transmission (under 6000 miles) I have there is .026" thrust clearance (slop end to end) This allows the gear to waller on the shaft. I remember Nev pointing out the thrust shimming of the gears on some of the boxes he has opened up leave a lot to be desired. To me this particular transmission needs thicker shims or in this case splined thrust washers should be a wee bit thicker. I have not taken her apart yet but would love to hear from @Neville Lush on his opinion of circlip orientation Specifically how he interprets the manuals pictorial view of the installation.

I'm gonna put my rocket in my lounge after first disassembling it and carrying it upstairs and then jus use it as an ornament come coat hanger . No more nightmares !

Not ready to flip the rocket at this stage or mothball it either just lingering doubts about long term ownership, the Busa I rode in a ride swap with my mates son has 95000 hard Ks on the clock with only minimal servicing , only the normal valve adjustments, tyres and chain/sprocket replacement it ticks over like a Swiss watch and cruises on the Freeway at 130Kph in 4th with 2 to go at $18500 Aud new on road, 300Kph and 195Hp out of the box not such a bad thing
I know its not good form to talk up other bikes on a bike specific Forum, but I am just talking about bikes in general like we do on our regular boys day out on the bikes

Certainly not pointless at all ! I would never swap my rocket for anything and should the worse ever happen , it will be you guys I turn to for help and advice . I read every post and soak it up . As for the busa , if I had to sell either that or the rocket it would be the busa to go ! Problems or no problems I love my rocket and all said and done , a gearbox rebuild on the triumph would still work out less than the cost of all the rear tyres I have put on the busa in the time I have owned it !
 
I am now on a PC. I apologise for thinking Warp was Paul B. My response is still the same however, why do you need my opinion AGAIN when you have Warp and his expert buddy to help you out? If you do want my opinion Scott then either look up what I said before or email me. My opinion , which is only my opinion, is still the same on these gearboxes, I have not found anything to make me change my mind.
 
AH I am guilty by association even though I keep a neutral stand point in the problematic threads. OK, I guess. I apologize for upsetting and or bothering you and anyone else as I was just trying to get a good conversation going that many could learn from.

personally i like every ones opinion
i dont understand if there is a prob

if some one thinks i am wrong if they can back it up with good info i will change my opinion.

my opinion most of the time is just a good guess (without checking the bike) and it takes a good mechanic to find the prob
 
Ken, these gear box's are a mechanical device built by men, so can be fixed/set right by other Men.
When we know that the basic design is O.K. it then leaves any problems down to either poor materials used (probably not) or poor set up.
The problem is knowing exactly what is required to set it up properly .
What Scott has said re the shimming is what I'm talking about here.
I rode a Thunderbird Storm a while back, now I figure this must have a pretty similar gearbox to the Rocket and it shifted as sweet as a nut.

I'm reading every post that has the word gearbox mentioned so as to glean any info that I possibly can.
Scott what sort of clearance do you think that the gears should be shimmed to ?
Re Nev's comments about some gearbox's leaving a lot to be desired are an indication as to what to look closely at.

Right from when I first got this bike, 1st to 2nd was a real dog to change, unless I went real slow, it did feel as tho' the clutch was dragging a little.
So when I get this down, I'll also be looking real close at the clutch actuation as I do feel that it's not lifting/clearing the drive 100%
