As we all know these gearboxes do SOMETIMES have an issue. The basic gears are robust I believe. The assembly/quality control is sketchy in my opinion. They need to be set up well , if the engine is apart. Sorry Scott, if I seem grumpy, you remained neutral maybe when you should have called BS. Most of the folk here know there is some problems. Maybe get Bob Carpenter on here to describe what he does to fix them ?

there may be several reasons the gear box fails. jmo
@warp9.9 i have never seen this clip that comes off however most snap rings have a real flat surface in one side that i usually put out some also have a tapper (on the points) to allow the snap ring pliers to better grab the point of the snap ring and i take this into consideration when installing so the next guy does not have a problem taking it off.
on a ford trans there is a snap ring that is about two inches dia. and that ring has a habit of coming off so u can buy a spiral cir clip that raps around the grove a couple of times. and i have never had one of these fail.
on an auto trans it is better if u can get the end play down to about .010 some times i do this by putting two shims in and cutting a few thousands off the other part to get the clearance i want. that works well on a component assembly also.
of coarse all that i have said might not have any bearing on the rocket transmission.:(
actually what we need is a brand new rocket transmission to measure the clearance and check it out any body want to donate.:laugh:

Carpenter said the snap ring came off mine, due to the fact that Triumph seems to put them on randomly, rather than with the sharp side opposite the thrust. He also undercut the dogs, and for around $150, if I remember, put in a billet 4th gear, he had 10 of them made once.

Thanks Tripps for the info
on those clips i would think it would be a real problem to get just the right metal and have the correct spring tension and then have the installer put it on perfect. it is an art to install them without spreading them to much which would make them sloppy in the grove which may be what is causing them to come off. of coarse i do not know if they come off or break?

Why is this different to our famous friend who says the trans are all STOCK ?

Certainly not pointless at all ! I would never swap my rocket for anything and should the worse ever happen , it will be you guys I turn to for help and advice . I read every post and soak it up . As for the busa , if I had to sell either that or the rocket it would be the busa to go ! Problems or no problems I love my rocket and all said and done , a gearbox rebuild on the triumph would still work out less than the cost of all the rear tyres I have put on the busa in the time I have owned it !

I'm the exact same bro I'd never leave my Rocket. but if one of the bikes had to go it would be the busa even though I think it's one of the best bikes ever made. it really is a masterpiece of machinery.

So true turbo ! Bought mine new in 99 1st generation . Nearly 17 years ran nitrous and rode it hard and it's never given me a single problem apart from the front brakes seizing once . Engine still feels as tight as the day I bought it and still looks like a new bike ! Trouble is , as I get older my intentions are starting to outweigh my abilities and this old worn body don't articulate as it once did . Riding it became more of a chore than a pleasure with a near death experience every time I took it out . Enter the Rocket ! Same rush but in soo much comfort and after a 2hr ride I don't have to click my knees , hips and neck back into place . Having said that , my old neck still gets the punishment . Plus the Mrs loves the rocket and I don't get her feet appearing under my armpits any more when I tuck my head down at 170mph ! VIVA LA ROCKET .
