Sad to report that I started with gear problems today! I am not an expert, but the noise I was hearing from the engine when down shifting was not good. The gears were slipping and it was hard to change up or down and he clattering noise.....

What could be the problem? What is the worst case I am looking at? Is it usual wear and tear or something specific?

Any light on this would be good. It is a 2008 classic.

Tks

Could be your detent spring. Mine broke a couple months ago with similar symptoms. When I would downshift I would get false neutrals and it would jump out of gear too. I have an '09 Standard. Look for the thread "R3T Transmission trouble" too.

I have 2008 standard sounds like same problem I had ,broken detent spring ,was not an expensive fix ,about $300 if you can't do it your self sometimes they will do it under warranty

Sounds like a deten spring to me too. Don't let anyone tell you the engine has to come out to fix it , can be got at through the clutch cover. A bloke i know got told it required engine removal ... costing him a small fortune. Try for a Warranty claim .. it's a pretty common problem .. worth a try.

My detent spring broke about 3 months ago, too. It's recommended that you have the bike delivered by any safe means available rather than riding it further and risking worse damage from mashing through the gears. There is an outside possibility that the problem has to do with a loose bolt behind the shifter arm which sits inside the engine case. The factory improperly 'loctited' the bolt on some models and they can work their way loose. I believe that that particular problem was worked out by your model year, though.

Nevertheless, the clutch cover on the front of the engine will need to be removed in order to discern where the problem lies. Hopefully, it's just the spring, otherwise the engine has to be dropped and cracked open... an expensive proposition required to fix a part that isn't even broken and is entirely the fault of the factory.

More than likely it is just the spring. If it is, make certain that they fish around thoroughly and carefully with a magnet for any of the bits that may have fallen into the nooks and crannies of the front of the engine casing.

Triumph should be making good on this repair, as it is not uncommon, but, to my knowledge, they are disavowing the crappy spring and any problems it might cause when it breaks. If you have recently had your oil changed, have the dealer drain it before the repair and then add it back post-repair in order to avoid being scalped for a dealer-priced ($$$) oil change!

The dealer on opening the clutch cover confirms it is the detent spring that is broken. They do not carry this on stock, so has to be ordered from the UK, which he reckons will take 2-3 weeks!! Is there anywhere else I can get it faster?

owning an 08 model myself I am starting to get worried is there any warning signs?
should I be changing mine out regardless?
is the replacement springs a newer stronger spring?
are the one's that have broken just part of a bad batch?

The only warning I had, which in any case was late, is the increased level of noise during gear change. This preceded the slipping into neutral between gears.

Never had any noise at all I don't know whether it was just coincidental or not but I just rode my bike with out using the clutch for a couple of days until It was fixed .that was about 15'ooo km,s ago
