Fuel Gauge shows empty at half tank

yea, I've noticed I have got alot worse mileage since I removed the secondaries,
installed the GiPro, and the DoBeck.
But DANG, what an improvment in performance..
Besides, who cares about mileage,
I ain't trying to "go green" or save the earth by my little bit of gas usage.
It is what it is, 22 MPG, who cares.
Besides, every hundred miles or so,
I need to take a leak and get a smoke anyway.;)

most profound and philosophical comment I read in a long time no ****..

Float Bend Process

I'm with Skip - I did the exact process specified in the thread mentioned earlier on in this thread - great pics, easy to understand. It did take some fiddling, but now my light comes on with right at one gallon left in the tank (which for me is about 35 miles - copy on the flogging!). I highly recommend doing this adjustment.

I guess I "could" do the float bend process, but my bike is still under warranty. I'll let the Dealer handle that as I'm busy dressing her up with chrome, a GiPro and other goodies...
I had the dealer try to fix my early light problem first, they got it to come on a little later but not much. I did the float bend and got it right where I wanted it, then the dealer did some work later on that had something to do with it idling too high once in awhile prior to the key switch failing and it went back to coming on too early again. I don't know what they did, but they somehow undid my fix and I have to start over again.
Someone mentioned that they bent the float through the filler neck with a long screwdriver and a coat hanger .... I'll have to think about that method real hard before trying it. Seems like you could do some serious damage in there that way but it would sure save alot of time and hastle if it worked.

Watching the mileage on my trip meter, which I reset religiously with every fill up, does it for me. I'm getting between 30 and 35 mpg and my light has come on with between 120 (with the twitchier wrist) and 150 miles (at the higher mileage #) on the clock.

Hellfire, there is a thread I've seen somewhere describing the through the tank fix, but it's risky business, at best!

mikemartin, where you been, how've you been? Ever coming up this way?

One of these days with a few drinks in me, I'll dawn the surgical mask and play operation with a clothes hangar and long flat blade screwdriver. I'll let you know if the patient survives the procedure. :p

Hi, i can't find that tread and pics , do you got a link for this?

From new the low fuel light has come on with about 25% to 30% of useable fuel left in the tank, it's not consistent, but like most I ride to the KMs rather than the fuel light. Even the fuel calculator does some strange calculation.

The most I have ever done without filling up was 320km but I was risking running out.

Back in the day, I bought a new 1972 Toyota Landcruiser. When I picked it up I noticed the fuel gauge was close to empty and I thought I'd fill it up close to home (which wasn't all that far away). Well, it ran out of gas as soon as the indicator went to "E" and I'm stuck on the side of the road with my brand new 4X4 about 15 miles from the dealership...

When I took it in for the first service I told the Service Manager about it and he said "E" stands for "Empty" and it was working as it was supposed to. He said there isn't any Reserve but would see what he could do. After I got it back I found out I had a great reserve but when the tank was completely full it would only indicate "1/2". The mechanic had bent the float rod so I would have a reserve and it worked. I had a reserve of about 8 gallons for the rest of the time I owned it...

I've also been less than thrilled with the gas gauges on my Rockets - stays way up there toward Full a LONG time, then drops very quickly - nothing linear about it... I thought maybe it was just that particular bike but after reading the posts, it seems to be the norm.
