Ive always been curious as to the need for the springs, what do they achieve ?

They hold the pipes together makes for a quick disassemble and reassembley Better for race applications than street use in my opinion

It is a racing thing. The springs stop cracks from expansion/contraction from wide temp swings
and heavy vibration under extreme race conditions.

I used springs on my drag car collectors cause heat cycling loosing the collector bolts. I always ran safety cables in case the springs broke

Exactly, they make a system "look" like a Race system.
No problem in a race application, but on a road bike doing a lot of miles the springs will allow movement therefore chaffing, which causes leaks.
This is exactly why I fully weld my systems. Also this means that you can offer the pipe up to the head in one piece. Simple.

Well....I recently dropped a new cam in my Scrambler and had to remove one header pipe so I could get at the cam chain tensioner. Having springs on the exhaust made the job (that part at least) very quick and simple.
