I'll be leaning on y'all a lot. I went to the local Triumph dealer and asked the service tech about the chrome filter cover, and he said he had no idea what I was talking about. That didn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the dealership.
Don't try to pour all the oil in at the same time or you will make a mess! pour about 41/2 Quarts in start it up let it run it will go down turn it off, then pour in the rest!(almost 6QT total) Don't use Rotella (tractor oil) Mobil one or any Motorcycle 4t full synthetic ! Torque wrench is must !
The more DYS the better for you and the bike. Slowly build your tool box and repertoire of the things you can do. The oil change is #1. Nobody is going to be as careful as you with your Rocket. For me it is half the fun. If I don't' know, I ask the seniors and get an answer quick. Have fun.
The filter your describing sounds like a K&N chrome filter. They have the nut on them for easy removal. The hole is for safety wire if you race the bike.

One last question on the subject, I hope: My only other bike has a center stand, making it easy to work on. What's the best method to secure the Rocket upright and allow clearance for a drain pan underneath?

I just lay a 2 x 4 on thecfloor under the kickstand loosen the plugs , slide the drain pan under her, remove plgs and change the oil. No need to lift her up.
