That's the fuel tank prop rod. It's supposed to sit in 2 nylon friction locks under the tank.

WE have a special 2 x 4 that we use for prying / beating self-defense and to pry us out from under the car if we get stuck.
but the small rod works better for checking how much gas i have left
we have about a dozen broom handles for hood props

I have better luck and stability with the custon 2x4 myself. I was never fond of the prop rod.
