Cover on left side???

What is the black cover directly under the shaft. It really cleans up the bike nicely on that side. I want to go towards a Zard exhaust or Shorty style...but never keen on the open gap left by the pipe removal on that side.

Akita, sorry about the long, long delay to reply. That is simply a cut-to-fit peice of aluminum that was painted with flat black spray paint. I hate that big gap on that side also. It made all the difference in the world. I also cleaned it up by putting a auto door gap protector strip on the edge.
