Eliminate LH side muffler? Run just RH two??

After searching here & the web for a decent flowing cat box replacement part I was struck by how much $$$ such a seemingly simple exhaust reroute piece commanded!
Surely ditching the LH muffler and making a simple nearly straight through adapter pipe to the RH mufflers only has been tried before. Or has it?
What would you think of attempting to do this?
Would the 2 RH mufflers only, MINUS the restrictive stock catbox still flow enough to run good?
My logic here is I wish to ditch the catbox mainly for heat reasons. I don't want a loud system and wish to retain the stock mufflers just in case they {gov't} starts cracking down on that here as they have been talking about a lot lately. Looks are of secondary importance as my Corbin bags hide the mufflers pretty much anyway. Dropping the catbox and LH muffler would save a good bit of weight too.
Any input or experiences for you guys?
Pics of some creations would be great.

We cut the second RHS muffler off my Rocket trike, and blanked off the Cat box outlet. it runs fine. It may not be ABSOLUTELY perfect, but it's OK.

I'm just about to take the next step of replacing the standard 'zorts with TOR's and putting a hand-built cat bypass in to do the 3-into-1-into-2 split.

Or you can buy something off the shelf, as advised above...

I guess another related question to this would be what kind of performance gain, if any, can be had by using an obviously better flowing cat bypass pipe with stock exhaust? Also does a high flow bypass pipe give good heat reduction? Bear in mind I have an '05 with no catalyst inside, just the ungainly looking catbox.

MD, I'm not referring to any thing happening right now specifically. I am just predicting what my senses say is going to happen. Given the sheer number of loud bikes and all the grumbling I hear about them I think it is inevitable we will face Db testing of some sort in the near future.
I just like to stay ahead of the curve myself.

I went with the CAT bypass box and 2 TOR pipes. I capped off the left hand port of the collector myself using a 1 1/2 inch copper cap from the local hardware store, i cut in slots and used a standard muffler clamp with exhaust tape for a tight seal. very low cost and easy to do if you want a 3 - 2 look. The bike definitely picked up power with the CAT Converter gone and the TORs. The cost was $350 for the bypass box and $175 per TOR pipe. The parts to cap off the port were under $20.I have a picture of this on page two of the customization section of Album. If I had to do it again I would strongly consider the D&D option. I believe the price is $500 and you eliminate the bypass plumbing all together. The only concern I would have with the D&D pipes is how loud they would be. I have the D&D pipes on my TBS and they are loud. I think they would be louder than the TORs. You could always get the cat bypass and cap of the left hand port and just keep the 2 stock pipes on the right side.

tropic----here is a wicked look! run 1 into 3 but put a cut-out before you get to mufflers! open cut-out for loud! close to conform to code. ---1960's trick on hot rods! ------john

This looks do-able.

Check out the pic.
Looking at the location of the 3 into 1 outlet and the RH muffler inlets I think I may be able to fab up a decent flowing "Y" pipe to mate them up straight thru. Maybe even put a kicker to go over to the LH muffler to let it in on the fun. Obviously I would have to reconfigure the RH mufflers inlets to make them removeable with band style clamps or something similar. The chrome heat shield would cover it all up.
I really want to retain the stock mufflers to keep the noise level down.
I don't understand why there has to be such a big, heavy POOR flowing cat box on the R3 unless there is catalyst material inside.
Anybody have an answer to that?

Maybe I'll give this a try!
Anyone have any spare RH mufflers to donate or sell me real cheap?? [/img]

vance&hines

How about V&H pipes, straight as you can get them off the head.
Porker's by White, sounded real nice!
D&D's up-sweap a little too much!
