Driveshaft spline stripped

And so they should, must have smarter Triumph employees here. There is a problem with the gears not engaging properly when the clutch is not working as it should. This makes you think it's in gear when it's only half in, then it drops out under power.

Deten spring... been down that track too !!!! Had quite a few problems with the Rocket in the 2 years i have had it now that i think about it. Did my best to tell the dealer about it jumping out of 1st gear but they reckon it didnt do it when they test rode it... Time will tell i guess, can't claim i didnt tell them if the problem still there when i pick my bike up early next week!

I have a 2005 R3. The driveshaft spline failed at 22K miles. Triumph agreed to replace the part, I paid for labor. My dealer at the time stated that Kawasaki and Yamaha used the same driveshaft and their specs called for it to be lubricated at the service intervals while Triumph had no such spec. They were perplexed by that. My dealer started lubing the spline at every service interval. The bike now has 40k miles on it and the replacement spline is 50% worn, in spite of being lubed every 10K miles. The dealer now wants to lube it every 5,000 miles, at my expense of course.

Something is obviously defective in the original manufacture, however Triumph will not do anything as they say the issue occurred out of warranty. I tried to use the logic as was used by a poster here that the spline had to be wearing during the warranty period and was only discovered out of the warranty period and there was no way of knowing of the problem during the warranty period, but they would not hear of it. I also brought up the fact that an implied warranty might be in force here, and, to my disbelief, they stated that "since you drove the product as a motorcycle for eight years, we have fulfilled any obligation under an implied warranty." What did they think I was going to drive it as- a submarine?

In all they displayed a very arrogant attitude in my phone conversations and correspondence with them. I am disgusted with them and have lost all respect for the company.

What I am going to do is buy another shaft, have a friend who is a bike mechanic install it and then lube it myself every 5,000 mi. Another R3 forum has directions for doing that. I will not deal directly with Triumph any more.

Make sure you use moly 60 at least you can get it from honda. I use a Moly assembly paste made by Dow Corning or Dow chemical. It is used in the aircraft industry.

"Honda MOLY 60" shaft drive spline lube. That's the good stuff! My 2005 Honda ST1300 required the rear shaft spline be lubed. I can't remember what the mileage interval was, but I think 20,000 miles. I lubed mine when I changed my first rear tire around 8,000 miles. There was sufficient lube on the spline from the factory, but I cleaned off the old grease and re-lubed it anyway. No spline problems with the ST1300's that I have heard of.

I wonder if Triumph's drive shaft supplier might have made some shafts that were not properly heat treated. That would explain the excessive wear some here have indicated.

Bingo! I have 90k miles on mine and no spline issues. I have always coated the splines with Bel-Ray waterproof grease at each rear tire change, but will switch to the Moly 60 for the next one. Never have lubed any other part of the shaft drive. I think some (many?) Rocket owners simply got the shaft with poor quality parts.

Guess I was really lucky then. Apparently, I got two of the poor quality shafts. I got the shaft alright...:D
I am talking to a guy in Perth at the moment who says if he has the right cutter he can make me a splined coupling hardened for Au$440 but I have to buy 10, who wants one?
Who wants to sell me their knackered diff???
Easy to change see my post entitled "Bevel box internels"

Note the thread date was 7 years ago. But earlier R3 diffs are different to the Roadster and Touring ones. Not sure if the splines differ but someone will chime in.
