gday fellas,

after meeting a few of the lads and seeing evil mitchs bars I've decided I'm definitely going some custom bars.

question is, whenever I've thought of drilling bars for internal wiring I've always had people say i shouldn't as it will weaken the strength of the bars. personal i always thought if you hit them that hard the last thing you'd be worried about is the bars bending. also when i look at others that have done it i see the hole is between our 2 clamping spots so for it to be an issue you'll need to put that much pressure you'd need to bend the risers first.

now that I've stated my thoughts can you confirm if it is ok. am i missing something?

those with an opinion or some knowledge please post.

thanks in advance.

 There's a huge hole at each end of mine..

I would say ponters that if the quality of bar steel and the cross sectional tube thickness is equal to the Triumph OEM bars then it should be fine...

There's no problem with drilling the bars, when i have modded bars for others i have milled a slot instead of drilling just a hole say, 10mm by 30-40mm long, its a litte easier to get the cables inside the bar that way. This might sound obvious but... be really careful when deburring the hole/slot so no sharp edges remain, i've come across quite a few H-D with shorts in the electrical system because of this.A simple way to test that there's no sharp edges is to use a paper towel or similar.Put the towel inside the slot, and pull it back out, when the towel doesn't tear up when you pull it out youre done.

No need to worry about the strenght, if you make your own bars, use seamless tubes
(hydraulic tubes work fine) 2-3mm wall thickness is enough.

Just my 2 cents...

Ponters, If you are really concerned you could drill the holes that suit your needs, drill them oversize and have a tube welded into the oversize hole at the right angle.
Its a bit more messing around - re-chroming etc but certainly strong.

What Mittzy said is a great way to solve your concern though but yeah like I said I didn't need to drill mine
