No, not sure if you were making light of the previous comments. I haven't read my owners manual lately so I can't say this for sure, but...., it probably does say use only OEM recommended tires (meaning no car tires) and not to be used with a trailer hitch or to tow. From the manufacturers (and the dealer's as well) point of view it is a matter of liability...they don't want anything to do with it, they could conceivably get sued by any lawyer who took your case to make something out of it. It's not worth it to them to take the risk (dealers: in most cases, D&D Cycles is one of them).
But it has been mentioned that as far as voiding the warranty itself as long as the addition of the car tire or trailer hitch is not the cause of whatever is wrong with the bike (and that can be subjective depending on one's point of view...dealer usually wins) then it should be covered.
Lot's of guys have gone to the "dark side" I would imagine it is a risk they are willing to take to make their dollars stretch more as far as rear tire replacement goes especially with the limited choice(s) that are out there. I believe the common consensus among all of the darksiders is that the handling takes a little getting used to but after that initial phase is past most like it. Just don't expect the manufacturer to be gung ho about it. As Boogerdave said his dealer (mine as well...I think) said that the engine on the Rocket is the same size as the one in a inline four Ford Ranger implying I think (couldn't tell from BD's comment whether the last part was his comment or still part of the dealer's comment) that if you want to tow something get a truck.
Coming from the Gold Wing world previously, lot's of them have hitches to tow trailers and many have also gone to the "dark side" so it appears to be a matter if "you" want to accept the risk or not then do what you will.
