and can say there is no original screw holes unless they are attaching it to the coil mounting brackets.

You can see on of the brackets here.
Left hand photo. You can clearly see the front one. The rear looks as if it goes onto the filler plate behind the engine.

Not my cup of tea either. Bugs me that I cant grip the left hand side of the tank with my knee as it is.

But with matching side covers - it'd be different.
