Brute exhaust installation

Alpental, I would clean out the ports of all the crap, scrap it all back to clean alloy, fit the seals, as you say they have little tabs that will hold them in place, ensure that the sealing face on the manifold block is clean, it should be flat, then simply bolt it all up.
No sealant of any sort should be required.
The gaskets are copper so will crush to suit both face's.
As for where the pipes slip into the collector, I would put some Silicon sealant in the joint there as the silicone is flexible, you don't want anything that sets hard as vibrations will shatter it then it will leak.
These slip joints are never a great idea for sealing.

When I installed my Preds many moons ago I kept the Acorn nuts.
The nuts were loose after the first ride, so I torqued them to spec before the next ride,
I did this 4 or 5 times and they stayed tight after that.
I suspect when the copper gasket is crushed, it loosens after a heat/cool cycle, but eventually stabilizes.

You're certain about this? There was so much silicone around the existing gaskets I removed that it seemed like they were almost floating in it - top, base, and all around each one. The new gaskets have little tabs that neatly hold them in place without any silicone necessary. I just don't want a leak.
I know I don't need the acorn nuts, but I like the finish. They don't appear deep enough to mount the CR header plate to the studs, hence why I was looking at nuts. Anyway, I'll wrap it all up and let you know how it goes once the springs from CR arrive. I need to change out my rear tire again anyway.

A couple years ago, after installing my CES, I experienced the same issues.
My first long trip out, I had to purchase a wrench for this. It remains in my tank bag today although seldom used.

Thanks, I bought it used, cleaned it up, and had the whole thing thermocoated black at a local shop. Already got Ramair v.2 installed. O2 is already plugged, and I'll trace the O2 sensor wires up and remove that cleanly. @HansO kindly sent me a tune for the whole thing once the exhaust is installed.


Thanks for the advice. I've tried calling Carpenter a few times for new springs, but haven't had anyone return my voicemails. I'll keep trying...
EDIT: Just spoke to someone at Carpenter who said he'd send the replacement springs out free of charge. Nice guy!

I wrestled with that exhaust for almost 8 hours over the weekend getting it to fit before taking it to a muffler shop. They ended up having to trim a couple pipes to get it to fit, but man that sucker sounds sweet and literally spits fire! Looks great!! I tried to purchase that exhaust from stripes for the same amount, but he wasn't ready to sell at that time. It looks like you followed my plans exactly as I had pictured. Great job!!
