Hi all, getting ready to leave for the Grand Canyon on Saturday. Checked my gearcase oil and found it was full, but kind of dark and crappy looking. I read on the other site that the stock oil breaks down and makes sludge that collects in the bottom, so even when you replace the oil (I'm going to use Royal Purple full synthetic) it will turn dark again right away. Cutting to the chase here, does anybody have a good method for getting the sludge out of the bottom of the case ? Is there something I can put in and drain out that will clean it without leaving undesirable residues ? Let me know, SOON ! Thanks, Fred

Not all bikes seem to develop the black sludge in the same amound of riding time. Some, never seem to do so.

Anything you use to clean out the case will need to fully dry or be flushed out afterwards.

That said, gasoline works fine. Use an air line to dry it out afterwards, and then flush with a small amount of new gear lube, then fill the case.

That'll work ! Thanks, Fred

When I got home from work tonight I drained it out and it looked pretty good. Looking at it through the fill plug before I drained it I would of swore it would be black coming out. Ran a little new oil through it and it came out clear so I guess I'm a motorcycle hypocondriac ! At least it's one more thing I don't have to worry about. Off to the Canyon ! Thanks for the responses. Fred
