Which battery specifically did you get? With this one http://shoraipower.com/lfx36l3-bs12-p130 I haven't had any problems with either cranking or reserves. It does weigh 5 lbs, not 2.5, and is size-wise a drop-in replacement for the stock battery. And they claim the equivalent of 540 CCA, which considering how authoritatively the starter spins I really don't doubt.

I paid for the Shorai-specific charger. I'm planning on getting the same battery again next time. Comes with a "maintain and exercise" setting and a "charge to the max" setting, have it on the former right now over winter.
Hah, ok, I'll "settle" for 540, it's enough for little old me. The starter motor should have pulled no more than it could handle though, strange that you fried it. I mean, electrical stuff pull the power, it's not "pushed" down the line.

The Shorai battery was a piece of S....t for me because it would crap out after any length of time with the ignition on without the engine running. Over $300 and turned out to be crap.
You cannot get a free lunch! The Shorai left me stranded,
Take your chance and live with it.

Ah but - it turned out that the starter was defective - a normally battery simply turned it slowly. It was 35 years old. So I gave it an unrestricted current flow - SMOKE
I've done two 1000+km multi-day trips with the Shorai plus daily riding over a two-year period and have had no issues starting the bike, but it is otherwise stock. I suppose if the engine had upped compression and other stuff that made it harder to crank it might not suffice. Though in that case I doubt the stock Yuasa would, either.
