UNCLE JESSE, YA GOTTA GET A NEW BATTERY OR SOMEONE IS NOT GONNA BE HAPPY, AN YA KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THIS ***** GETS POSTAL....BUT I DO STILL LOVE YA !!!! :p

Jesse I started having the same problem this year replaced with an oddessy pc545-p no mod needed plug and play no problems since

+1 on the PC545, fits right in the orig. batt box--although I've only had it in since the spring--and the bike doesn't see any of the frigid temps you guys are talking about...

That alternator should hold it's own even at idle, might have some diodes gone bad. It's a shame they aren't as easy to service as a car.

Thing about diodes failing, when one goes they tend to all fail soon after from the added load passing through them. Just in case you don't know what they do, they change Alternating current into Direct Current. When half the wave gets cut out from diode failure, the charging gets reduced as well. Something to consider.

Triumph does not even rate their alternator to 37 Amp until it hits 2000 RPM. I had this trouble in Sturgis on a 1500 intruder stopped at a shop specializing in batteries the fellow told me he says I will sell you one but there is no need let me put it on charge so we did he told me below 1000 RPMs they are basically useless he said that you would not believe the batteries I sale at this event becalls of idling in traffic most people you cannot convenience so I sell them a battery take theirs charge it up test it and sell it used

I would think the regulator doesn't pass enough to charge the battery, but what do I know.:eek:

well if you get to thinking about it you have 2 headlights 1 taillight and then the fan kicks on not exactly sure how many amps the fan drawls but, I would bet it is considerable and your RPMs is approximately 750 a older battery does not stand a chance considering it is so small a bad week point  There is a Harley Davidson shop right up the road from me the mechanics over there say that Harley Davison has the same trouble you have to have the RPMs up for them to charge.

The reason for alternators rather than generators is that alternators have a decent output at low revs. I've checked mine with amp meter and it more than holds it's own at idle. Having the ability to turn off the lights even allows it to charge at idle, I could see how idling might draw the battery down if you couldn't shut off the lights and the battery was aged (sulphated), In that case the resistance in both might be more than the alternator can put out.
Still, with a good battery, alternator and leaving the lights on the bike should idle indefinitely. Having it croak after 15min of idling isn't factory design spec, not at all.

Jesse i sat idle for damm near an hour on the way to sturgis on 80 with no problem... Its your battery just reach in your pocket and buy the odyssey 545 and quit worrying ...... if you don't I am going to tell hellraiser to kick your A$$ :)

I do agree it is most definitely the battery just waiting on the first of the month retirement check only comes once a month things get tight at the last of month should have one about Thursday first of month :D
