Awesome and sad ride report

So after getting Mufasa back from Nels running smoother and better than ever before I decided to go on a small 300 mile group ride. It included this magnificent bit of twisties:

Highway 47 in Oregon, amazing few miles of tight technical 30mph corners with good camber and NO traffic!!

Then we went to Seaside:



While at Seaside we ate some fantastic Steaks (fillet mignon):


Then we cruised back North towards home and I broke my cam chain, and my heart a little, to have the Rocket suffer a completely unanticipated mechanical failure.



Luckily, the rider of the R1200GT was a fantastic guy and let me borrow is truck and trailer and tow the Rocket home in shame, but better to tow in shame than be stranded.

Sad too hear Rob.

I reckon there is much more wear on those nut's and Allen bolt's flats now than anyone else's R3s except warp's and Steel's.

Was it stock chain, did it let go at high revs and what is the valve train prognosis?

Valve damage is assumed to occur if you do a cam belt in a car engine while driving and with 4 valves per cylinder in our R3 mills it would seem likely as well.

Even more likely with high comp pistons biggish cam and oversized valves. Will do some testing to see how bad they are, if at all. Tearing the bike apart now

Visually everything is fine in the valve train. This is as far as I'm going tonight.

All journal surfaces are flawless as are the cam lobes.

I'll need a new chain guide, it got chewed a bit.

With the cams out the valves are all sealing. I sprayed some MAF cleaner in the ports, and it doesn't drain or leak!! Huge ****ing win. Going to get a scope in the bores and inspect the piston tops to see if they kissed soon. The shafts could still be bent, but if I don't see any kiss marks I'm calling them good and moving forward.

Fcuk me - That is the first snapped cam chain I've seen. Seen the odd worn one.

They all depress and return smoothly with no binding, though pushing them down is a serious bear lol.

Hard to say yet but so far all is good.
