Australia Day 26 January

Fair go mate in 60000 years they managed to invent a stick then when thrown comes back (sometimes) the wheel would have followed I reckon sooner or later, but they did have a nice property portfolio
They didn't impose Rolf Harris on the unsuspecting world either. Or Kylie. Truly criminal acts - oh wait ......................................

"and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals"?

I hope all had a good Ozzie Day. I had my own little celebration over here.

I know this post is late, but I was surprised by the controversy.

First, I would like to wish our Australian friends well on their national holiday.

I looked it up and found that the indigenous people are negative about it. In that way, it must be like our Thanksgiving holiday, and to a lesser extent, our Columbus Day.

One year my wife and I took the kids (18 and 20 year old "young men") to New England for Thanksgiving week. We spent Thanksgiving day in Plymouth and were treated to a steady dose of angry native Americans.

Usually our national holiday, which celebrates the Declaration of Independence, isn't controversial.

I noted with interest that Australian Day celebrates the arrival of a British Governor nearly concurrent with their loss of the American colonies.

That is the reason they went to OZ. The British used to send their criminals to Georgia, but in 1776 the colonies stopped taking delivery and so they had to find somewhere else, and so they picked Botany Bay, but ended up in Sydney.

Interestingly, both the French and the Russians scouted it out to settle as well, but found that they were beaten to the post by the British. So if it weren't for the revolting Americans, the Ozzies would be speaking either French or Russian.

The Dutch mapped most of Australia before anyone. Even named it New Holland. Lots of places still have Dutch.names. They never ended up founding this place as they were too busy fighting everyone for the trade routes. They did have many areas, Indonesia, South Africa etc.

Here is our little celebration across the ditch in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand while visiting family
