Anyone have any first hand experience running a lakester or lake style header in their hot rod? Any performance numbers? I have just bought a very nice stock exhaust header that I might modify to a lakester type collector (if worth it power wise). The stock system is really a terrible set up. The 1.5" primary pipes are just stuck into the header flange and welded. I stuck my finger into the flange (from the engine end) and to my amazment found that the primary tube was rough cut and protruding from the inside wall by as much as an 1/8". Then the tube just plugs into the 1.75" log style collector at a 90 degree angle. Talking about lost efficiency! No wonder we loose so much HP at the wheel.
Here's my idea: Cut the original primaries off the flanges and clean out the inside of the flange to remove all pipe and smooth. Weld new 1.75" primaries to the outside of the flanges and have them angle down stream as they enter the cone shaped collector. Have the upstream end of the collector at 1.75" and downstream end at 2.25", which will carry down and out of a 2.25" performance muffler. I would think this would make some decent HP numbers as the 1-2-3 firing order should aid in creating a vacuum down the collector as each cylinder fires.
I know the log style collector (stock collector) is the most inefficient collector and the lake style collectors are used for racing so must be somewhat efficient. I also know a lake style collector is not as efficient as a traditional 3-1 collector but this setup will keep the OEM looks with full advantage of all the heatshields. I also plan on running a filtered Carpenter intake with the Lush cam/piston package. Sorry for such a long thread, now may the fur fly!
