Alarm & other PITA

Newby here (to this forum not bikes!).
I got my Rocket Classic ('08) just before Christmas & I soon found out the alarm was causing all manner of problems.
The previous owner had it fitted by Triumph (not cheap) & had had to fit a battery tender to prevent the battery from draining over a 2 week period.
I didn't know this, I found this out much later........
So after many random triggers (in the small hours of the morning I might add) I decided it had to go.
There's a few things you'll need to remove the alarm should you decide to:

1 pair of ear defenders/plugs.
1 alarm fob.
1 large dose of patience.
1 link plug (mine was taped to the inside of a side panel but they are available from dealers).
1 sealable box with rags inside or other soundproof-ish material.
1 pair of sturdy wire cutters.

Optional item:
Large hammer!

Ok, here goes.
Put on your ear protection.
Hold fob in hand or somewhere easily reached.
Remove seat to allow access to battery.
(The puny plastic ring fitted to release the rear seat on mine broke off, great eh?)
Alarm goes off, dis-arm with fob.
Prop fuel tank up with prop provided.
Alarm goes off, dis-arm with fob.
Disconnect battery (negative first).
Alarm goes off, dis-arm with fob.
Remove battery.
Alarm goes off, dis-arm with fob.
Trace wiring harness from alarm (mine was just behind the battery) to alarm connector under fuel tank.
Alarm goes off, dis-arm with fob.
Disconnect alarm from connector &, if you're quick, put alarm in the sealable box where it will bleat for about a day or so. :D
My alarm was fitted using heatshrink tubing (with glue inside) over the connectors & lots of nylon ties. :mad:
You'll need the cutters for the ties & the tubing but be very careful what you are doing!
There a LOTS of other wires in there as well, you've been warned!
Put sealable box somewhere where you can't hear it or use the optional hammer for instant & permanent disarming.
Fit the link plug into the connector under the fuel tank which should be a nice easy fit, don't force it.
If there is mechanical resistance then look again, check connector orientation.
It should just click into place.
Buy a GOOD disclock & use the factory fitted steering lock.
The best you can do is discourage the "casual" thief but you won't stop a professional.
I've known bikes to be lifted from their parking place into the back of a van with the alarm going & no one has taken any notice at all.

After all that I also found out the battery was shot due to being left on the battery tender for months at a time, ah well, never mind.

Now the teething troubles are out of the way all I can say is what a sheer brute of a machine! :eek:

you are not the first to have issues with the Triumph alarms system
 
I put the scorpio alarm on mine it has shock/tilt/and perimeter alarms all or combination of 3 depends how you set it up you can also cancell the ignition if they do get it started have not had any trouble with it except when i had perimeyer adjusted to fine went off most frequent. Its fun to watch all the admirals set the perimeter alarm off when they dont back off it chirps before going into the full alarm siren

The next project is to get some of the load off the ignition switch & a device to only turn the headlights on once the engine is running.
It's not really man enough for 2 headlights, poor little thing.
Shouldn't be too much of a head banger!
And when the ignition switch DOES start to act up it can do some REALLY weird stuff!
A friend has an '05 Rocket that was left outside for 6 months & here in the UK I'm amazed it survived.
That bike has had no end of electrical gremlins evicted by him & me.

At least I'm thankfull Triumph didn't fit CANBUS (AKA CAN'tBUS!) to the Rocket. :eek:

The preferred solution for offloading the ignition switch is the Eastern Beaver H4 kit. You can make your own but the kit is top notch and easy to install. There are several threads on it including install instructions.

IMHO, the headlight cutoff switch is unnecessary and potentially expensive. Expensive as in when you forget to turn the lights back on and the local constabulary writes you that very large ticket/citation.
 
I have been considering fitting an alarm and note that the OEM version gets a bit of flack (not to mention the price).

I have seen a device called an aFlasher that flashes the security LED as a deterrent. This fitted with say a Scorpio alarm is about half the price of the OEM alarm.

Has anyone had any exposure to the aFlasher that they can pass comment on?
