ABS Light stays on with 130/70R-17 front tire

Yepper...I kinda suspected that would happen with a /70 front...I (especially with a /55 rear) was worried when I went with the /55 rear but it was fine with a stock front.

Thanks for posting...saved me from having to "experiment".

Another drawback to ABS, whether the drawbacks outweigh the benefits is debatable I suppose.

As a matter of interest is anyone on here running the Exedra Max 240x55 rear with ABS?

I am and will be able to tell you after I get my front tire swapped back. Any good tire recommendation to match my exedra rear?

cadconversions,
I sure hope you get to the bottom of this as I am about ready to put a 130 front on my 2012 R3R.

I certainly had NO abs light issues throughout the use of a 140 Michelin or the 140 Dunlop on and needing replacement right now.

Any others out there running a 130???

I would live to so the 140 tire if it keeps the abs light off and the smaller tire. Best of both worlds but the 130 is an amazing tire

Which tire would you recommend in the 140 range? The Michelin or the Dunlop?

Update

Picked the bike up from the dealer this afternoon (BTW, Castle Powersports in Madison, TN has always done me well) and the guy even mentioned before I said anything that I might be able to get by with a 140 tire with the same profile (or close to it) and it not bother the ABS. He noticed just in the parking lot how much better the 130 tire made the bike handle compared to the others.

When I got the bike back - the ABS light was off until I drove it down the road a little. Got up to speed and the light came on. Decided to try it out and - yep, locked up the rear tire. ABS does NOT work when the light is on.

So, here's a great lesson - don't put the 130 front tire on with an ABS equipped bike. It's amazing but you will lose ABS function.

Looks like the 140 size will work and might get you best of both worlds. Cost me $150 extra for the experiment but hopefully someone on the forums will need a 130 tire that has a non-abs bike...

Now, gotta do some research on the 140's...

Based on all the good write-ups on the Exedra Max, last week I ordered front and rear. When I arrived at my local (Maine) Triumph dealer to have them installed this morning I was met by their mechanics, who I have a great deal of respect for and confidence in and their service manager, ditto.

They strongly cautioned me against installing the 130 up front as they felt that it would seriously compromise the ABS. system. Factory tech reps confirmed and said that it would, not could, but would cause erratic ABS functioning in some unexpected and challenging (i.e. no fun) ways. They indicated I would need to sign a waiver of all ABS brake systems as well as for overall safety. I do not think they had any agenda other than their best, and firm, advise. I've known them for a long time.

I decided to postpone the instal of the front but did put the Max 240/55 on the back. None had a concern for that. No light so far and I expect it would have now if it ever were. I take that to indicate the ABS system is reading and managing the braking properly (I hope).

The above happened, coincidently before this post began, and I likely would have missed it altogether other than my buddy Chris bringing it to my attention. I have only ridden the rear Max for about 80 miles, not enough time to offer any impressions. Nor on wet.

My reasons for swapping out the Mets were pretty much all about milage. Honestly I am, for me, 100% happy with the handling of the Rocket, notably with the swap of front and rear suspensions with Hagons. I have had a whole lot of different bikes, still have a Speedmaster but the Rocket does what the Rocket does just great for me. As with most here, I love the beast.

I guess my feeling about the 130 for our bikes with ABS is that it likely is not just a light issue but more what the light warns of. I have never had an ABS fault and I'm not sure I would like to. I do not know enough about the electronics of the system but I do suspect it is a rather intricate technology (my apologies to those that DO understand it).

Ride safe.

From what my guy said - the lights on the ABS isn't going to work and confirmed it with some wheel squeals on the way back from the shop. Sounds a quick tire purchase is on the horizon to swap it out.

OK this is PURE speculation but.....

Under EU law a mfr MUST allow for a plus or minus 3% difference in tyre size as the law allows you to use tyres that have a circumference of plus or minus 3% against the original spec. Why? because even within a given tyre size there are differences between mfr's and tread depth makes a bigger difference than you might think.

I dont have ABS - but the oly way (so far) I've discovered is to fit a 140/80R17 REAR TYRE up front. It has to be mounted counter rotational. 140/75 MAY ALSO GIVE AN ABS FAULT - I DO NOT KNOW BUT IT'S NOT WITHIN 3%

Thank god I have a pre ABS model.
