I just think they're different animals. Don't know what the OP considers to be "touring", but I don't really think of the R3T as a true "Touring" bike. It's a fine bike, but it's not in the same league (in terms of features) as the BMW, or Goldwing. I just think the OP should spend some time on one before dropping the coin.
I'll clarify. I would use this bike for the following:
1. Solo, multi day travel, usually a week to 10 days, 2 or 3 times a year.
2. 2-up, daylong road trips.
You're correct about the features as well. The 'LT has lots of "bells and whistles" which make a long trip more enjoyable. Although, I've taken the Scrambler to Florida on a 5 day trip and really enjoyed it. Wouldn't do it again though (at least, not while a bigger bike is available).
I will try and get some additional riding time on an R3T before making any decisions, but I understand that Triumph has terminated its truck demo program. I really enjoyed those things.
I still think an R3T is in my future. Maybe next year.
Yes, definitely ride one if you can. It's a MASSIVE bike and I bought one based on a 15 minute demo ride. That was a mistake. I'm 5'10" and 150 lbs. The bike is too big for me to ever get comfortable on long rides. I put risers on it, changed the seat, etc... and still got a neck and shoulder ache every time I rode it for more than 50 miles. I sold mine and got a Thunderbird (normal size bike). The Thunderbird doesn't have near the power, but it has plenty for me. Besides I have my Tiger for when I'm in the mood for a more "spirited" ride, and for touring.
That's right, the Thunderbird doesn't have quite the power (unless you have the 1700 version...which I just happen to have) but it has plenty of power (even more with the 1700 which has near about the same as the R3T).
I accelerated, for some reason, pretty hard last week and about came off of the seat...and I'm one heavy dude.
I saw reference to a 480lb max load in a cycle magazine article, though it was for the 2008. If it helps, I'm 280lbs and the wife is about 150. we ride 2 up all the time. just remember to reset the rear shocks to a higher setting.
