2 Rockets Compare Dobeck Performance AFR Plus to TuneECU - Long Post

@Mark Dunn after having the Doebeck on for a while now what is observations on performance and is it worth the money?

Hi Fingers,

I've had the AFR+ on for a couple of weeks and apart from a slight idle issue (which I think I've solved) it's been all good. I'm going to do a proper write up in another thread but the headlines are as follows...

Installation: Easy as long as you've got rid of the OEM air plenum tupperware. It would be a ***** to fit without that removed.

Controls: it takes a few miles to get used to how the various settings effect the ride but I soon got a feel for it and the settings are easily changed from the buttons on the AFR gauge.

Performance: Definitely smoother throughout the rev range with an obvious increase in torque, - especially at lower revs in high gears. Acceleration is better in all gears at all revs (and I must confess to having been a little bit naughty )

Gas mileage: Slightly better than before but not a big difference. However, remember that I'm still a neophyte at fiddling with the settings, so it may improve as I become more experienced.

Overall I'd say it's definitely worth the money.

Engine-wise the set up of my bike is now:
2009 R3 standard, D&D slip-ons (cat removed), RamAir filter, Dobeck AFR+, 20228 Triumph tune for TORS without cat.

Hope this helps,

Mark

8 pages and not one mention of the price...how much does it cost?...and I've been trying to visit the Dobeck website for a while now and I can't connect. What's up with that?

I'm not sure of the current prices. Call Dillon at (406) 388-2377. They have discounts for forum members and veterans. Current military too.

I see pretty old post glad it’s still here it’s an awesome write up, can I get your opinion on it these years later, I’m thinking about buying one from flipmeisters and installing on 2008 touring. I’m running ram air,d and d exhaust, cat delete, and 20368 tune ecu by nels, I’m either going to a dyno tuner in the next couple weeks or buying the dobeck. Thanks for the write up

Hi Kevin,

I've had the AFR+ for a few years now on my 2009 standard with Ramair filter, D&D exhaust and no cat. It works well but needs a little riding time to dial in the various settings. The other thing you may not have noticed as yet is that, at least on my bike, the reduction in 'smooth air' entering the throttle bodies (due to the Ramair filter) effectively reduces the airflow to the engine at idle and this results in a rich idle mixture. I ended up using Tune ECU to reduce the fuel via the 'L' tables by around 10% at the intake pressures where my bike typically idles, - around 580hPa.

The other thing to be aware of is that you definitely want to remove the secondary butterflies. Even if you set them at 100% in TuneECU they will still close up when at idle, not in gear and clutch lever out.

If I had a tuner nearby that could work with TuneECU I would have gone that route instead, but tuners who can do that are like the Jumblies:
"Far and few, far and few are the lands where the Jumblies live".

Hope this helps.

Hi Kevin,

The AFR Plus works well with the pre-Roadster Rockets. Something changed with the Roadsters that caused a glitch in AFR Plus. Dobeck no longer offers it for the Rockets. The fueler Flip sells is the first gen product. Dobeck does have a fueler that works OK. It is the EJK Gen 3 or Gen 3.5. I have that product too. I was the test mule for dialing in the AFR Plus and the EJK for pre-Roadster Rockets. My Rocket now has the RamAir filter, and 2 of the 3 pipe TORs with 1 stock pipe, and a Dyno tune from Nels 2 Wheel Dyno Works.

Bill.
