I'm getting closer to replacing the seals in the forks on my 3R having recently gone over 30K miles. I have the seals from Triumph, but trying to determine what fork oil to use. The service manual calls for ShowaSS47G which doesn't appear to exist on the Internet, anyway. None of the equivalency charts I've seen list that particular oil.

The closest I've found is Honda makes a ShowaSS47 - no "G." What's the difference I wonder (?) and, assuming none, do I really want to pay that much for a quart of oil? (~ $25 X 2)

My best guess is that it's 7.5 or 10W, but then again there is no consistency in actual weight between brands.

When I put Progressive springs in my Roadster I went with Belray 7w and that was fine.

Just found the Honda Showa SS8 for $9/quart. Anyone know the difference between SS8 and SS47(G)?

Yes, another oil thread, but a little different.

Any thoughts out there?

You cant get the oil from Triumph? I bought the extended warranty so I was lucky and got my forks done on the 2020GT a few months ago at around 70,000 miles or so for free.

... Source- did you call them? Thanks! I called my local dealer, expecting little, and was told they don't carry what's listed in the manual. Yep. I asked what the shop would put in if I took it to them (nope) and the parts guy said 10wt. BellRay. Your dealer said 5wt. 🤷🏼‍♂️

So, who Fknows? Not the dealership.

I'm probably going to go with Honda Showa SS8, which according to this chart (link below) is 10wt, but still open to suggestions- especially information on the mysterious Showa SS-47G.

I did read somewhere that the 47 is lighter than the SS8, so my thinking is (if true) that the 10wt will stiffen up the front a little more and I'm OK wit dat!

Any light fork oil will work.
The way they react is based on what oil you use.
I would start with 10w. If it feels too stiff drain it and fill with 7w. Fairly easy job.
But if you have some time. Drain some of the oil and send it for analysis and you will get the correct information as to what was in there.

Yes, I did call them. I also researched showa 47mm front forks kits online and they are also calling for 5W oil

IMHO 5W is too light for a heavy-weight MC. 7W or 8W would be my choice. Just enough viscosity to prevent wallowing in the twisties.
Even 10W would be better than 5W.
why would showa OEM kit will sell 5w to service their own showa 47mm forks?
