No way your getting 42 mpg on a R3. I get 31 max if I have a tail wind. 28 to 30 is the usual. Have TOR, Ramair and a HansO tune. It does smell rich but has power to show for it. Perhaps Scott can tweak it while in Stearns and I can get a little more. The Valkie gets 25. The Yukon XL does 19 to 20!

Come to our RAA West in July!
On Thursday, July 19th, we visit the Guru Dyno tuner, Nels Byersdorf.

Over 40 is quite possible, stock during break in period I got over 40.

Then I got mid 20s after break in until I got high comp pistons.

Now I get mid 30s, to low 40s on an excessively rich tune, I expect 45 is possible ridden gingerly with a little leaner tune.

I can usually average 7.6-7.8L/100kms - BUT on a "spirited" ride home two weeks ago I was closer to 9.6 - Fuelbot2.0.

The consumption on R3's (imo) has a lot to do with it's aerodynamics - Or lack thereof. Guys like @Claviger and @Paul Bryant despite their hubris have fairly stripped down beasts with a smaller frontal profile. Guys like me with Large screens, wind deflectors, large cases - who expect to run hard and fast will NEVER see good mileage. Much above 120kph and you can feel the air resistance build (more turbulence as it is released) - this means more power required - this means more fuel used. And once it starts to NEED more the demand increase to the square of teh increase. I.e. Double the effort needs 4 times the power.

For this reason I have the beast tuned down in 5th - it's a cruising gear - It keeps me in check. The problem a couple of weeks ago was I used 4th A LOT.

O.K. When out riding I don't possy foot around.
I set the trip meter to Zero when I fill up.
The next time I fill up I check the mileage, this afternoon for example, out blasting around some of the afternoon, I did 202.6Kms, filled the tank to the same point as always, 16.3 Liters.
So 202.6Km's is 126.62 Miles.
16.3 Liters is 3.58 Imperial Gallons, or 4.03 US Gallons
That is close enough to 35 MPG (Imperial) 31.4 MPG (US)
When just cruising I will often achieve more than 45MPG (Imperial)

After 130k miles, my lowest was 28mpg, sitting on around 90mph, and my best was 45+ mpg cruising at around 40-50mph at VERY high altitude in Colorado. Average was 36mpg. This, of course, is on the small US gallon. For Imperial gallons, add about 25%. Most of that was with a large windshield. If you are getting 18mpg then either your calculations are way off or there is something wrong.
