Never had any problems with my batteries over the years, even on freezing temperatures, this coming from someone who knows cold. This is my routine, during the riding season, if the bike is to sit for a week or longer, which is rare, it goes on a tender. Depleting and charging a battery constantly is hard on the battery...without getting into the principals of batteries. Some of the only batteries that can be treated in this matter are deep cycle and LiOn.
When I prep the bike for winter storage I have done this both ways, I take the battery out or let it sit in the bike, getting the battery out of my son's vmax is a pain so the pigtails are put on and the battery stays put. If I take the battery out I put it on the shelf on a tender during the entire time it sits.
Batteries die for any number of reasons but the most common is heat, heat can be generated in any number of ways. Excessive heat absorbed by engines, the sun or over charging. I never charge motorcycle batteries with car chargers, anything producing over 5amps for a prolonged time ( usually over an hour) will generate enough heat in a battery to shorten its life.
On the other side, all things being equal, some batteries just fail and unless you load test them it is difficult to determine why. Keeping a battery properly charged has always served me well.
