What Oil Are You Guys Using?

Tri recommends 10-40 or 20-50 full syn, and until recently I was using factory 20-50, but at my 10K service with new plugs they added lighter oil-and man this thing is faster than it ever was revving like mad-I capped off a 110 to 140 mph run that seemed instant (usually it takes a while to go from 130-140...not this time! Seems like at least 5 extra horses are showing up for work-despite the weather getting crappier! It also seems to be running cooler.

I know lighter weight oil makes more power/economy, but I wonder if the heavier weight should be considered a requirement for these engines-especially in this heat and my driving style.

But, these are top shelf synthetics, designed to run better than anything else (I know there are some better oils than Triumph's Mobil 1, but personally I think Mobil 1 is so good that it doesn't make as much of a difference).

here's a rule of thumb i've heard that seems to work well-
asian bikes- 10w40; euro and american bikes 20w50
truth is, i doubt it will really make much difference in wear factor, but i think the 20w50 might keep the engine a little more quiet, and the trans
shifting a little smoother. i've used amsoil in everything i own, and will put 20w50 in my rocket when that 1st oil change comes due.
i think your sudden increase in performance is likely the tune up parts, and not the oil viscosity - just my 2 cents. it will be good to hear what the others have to say

Dave,
What plugs did you put in ? Same brand? Was the heat range the same?

Whatever the dealer put in. They were pretty cheap too-nothing special $2-3 each (where's my receipt).

The only performance part of the tuneup was the plugs, and they all looked good (though #1 cylinder is running a little richer than the others). My instincts are still telling me a good portion is the oil, since it provides lubrication to both the engine and part of the driveline.

Gonna get it dynoed and upgrade the tune again this week. Curious to see...

Too bad can't use 5w30...

oil

I use amsoil 20W/50. Tranny seems to like this grade. I am going to follow Dave in Aus and change every 6000 miles from now on. Change the filter at 3000 miles.

gotta see the world, it will only take a minute

I just took it out again for a run AND man the difference was huge-especially up in the rev range. Hit's 6K now hard in the upper gears...

I'm going to try Amsoil 10-40 (it's just a smidge better than mobil-but hard to find).

I'm weighing drain oil only every 3K, with oil and filter every 6K. My only concern is the open K&N elements may draw in finer silt, requiring more changes.
