Weird Oil Change Experience

After fully draining the oil I added 5.5 quarts, as usual, and it nearly overflowed the oil tank!

I went inside and searched the forums looking for an explanation. Someone mentioned a similar experience, but it was determined that instead of one of the drain plugs he accidentally removed one of the tapered pipe threaded plugs instead. Yeah, I figured, that's what I must have done too. I decided to never tell the story.

So, I went back out and drained off 1.5 quarts and called it a day. The next morning I checked under the bike and was surprised to see that the actual drain plugs were all cleaned off from having been removed. Huh?

With the level now below the stick I started the bike and let her run for a minute, waited 30 seconds and then started sloooooowly adding oil back in, thinking that this shouldn't take long.

Well, I kept adding and adding, then exactly 1.5 quarts later it hit the second mark- perfect!

Riddle me this....anyone ever have to burp their bike to get all the oil in?

Yes...just did it today changing my oil. At 5 quarts I stand the bike upright and hit it a 30 second run, then I add a 1/2 quart and I’m good to go. Normally when I do a change the oil does not come close to filling the oil tank but it did today. No worries though, just let it idle for 30 seconds and it moves everything around.

I usually put about4qts.in start the bike for a few seconds shut it down and fill the rest of the way.

I'm sure the work shop manual Sat's to put in 4.5 litre's run for 30 seconds and top it up to 5.5 litres.

I do believe that it's was I who removed the wrong bung. And got a lot more oil than I hoped for. Lol.

Well, I was pretty sure until I saw those clean bolts that I had done the same thing. I can see how it could easily happen and I'm sure I'll be just as careful which bolts I turn next time as if I had made that mistake. I joked that I wouldn't admit it, but actually would have responded to that thread chiming in to say that you weren't the only one. With each wheel up on a 2X 8 it doesn't leave much room for actually sticking your head under the bike to see what your wrenching on

I've never had that happen with all the oil changes I've done. Just seemed kinda strange. Must have been a big air bubble trapping the oil in the oil tank is all I can think of.

It was my first time using Motul 300V, but despite the florescent color and interesting smell, I wouldn't think that was the difference. Next time- 4 qts, start and run, then add from there.

I remove one plug at a time then clean it and around the area before re-installing it, add 5.5 inc new filter start it and all is done been doing it this way for way over 100,000miles on my Rockets and all is good.
