Triumph Bonneville Celebrates 50 Years

I'm not crazy about the color and could care less about the medallion. Going down from 865 to 650 cc? Are they nuts?

Meriden Blues

So I win the color argument. Vintage "pearl grey", as initially announced, despite early pics stubbornly showing it to be a bluish shade of... blue, has just been re-christened "Meriden Blue".

Which ain't vintage at all. Or maybe, it is: On Aug. 9, 1980, "numerous" Meriden workers (out of the 450 left, 300 of them having already been deemed "redundant" ) and equally (if not more-) "numerous" members of the UK Triumph Owners Club marched on to Downing Street, with a petition against the closure of Meriden.

Whether the Prime Minister eventually received the petition or not is not known. What is known is that Triumph's transitional CEO, Geoffrey Robinson, upon being told about the 11th hour demonstration, " prompty stood down as chief executive".

My Centenial Edition T100 is a 790. Triumph bumped the displacement to 865 where it stands today. The Thrux is 900.

The 'carburetors' on the new bikes aren't really carburetors, but rather shells with fuel injection units underneath.

The one thing that bothers me about the Hinkley Bonnevilles (and all the twins) is the gas tanks. I would really like to see Triumph get away, or go back to the hydroformed shell without the stitch welded seam that's visible around the tank perhiphery. Meriden Triumph's didn't have that seam and I think it detracts from the looks of the bike as well as the 'kink' in the exhaust to a lesser degree.

First thing I did on my T100 was get rid of the 'kink' by having a set of stainless headers custom formed, to which I mounted '68 OEM peashooters.

The 1600 Thunderbird is due out late next year after a six speed tranny is designed and fitted to it. Other than the 6 speed it would have been out late this year.
