Ride
2006 rocket3
I've been putting this 2006 barn find Rocket 3 classic together and got it running perfectly. I took it for a ride and it has a strange tendency to kind of lurch and make a pop sound at about 5,000 RPM in second gear it doesn't pop out of gear per se but sounds almost like a chain slap any ideas. It is a little fiddly going into second gear you will miss it if you're not giving it a positive kick. Thanks

Had the same issue. It's the 2nd gear fork being worn out or bent. I've been down this rabbit hole all the way to the bottom and back with a shattered 4th gear. Trust me when I say it's just a matter of time before it starts popping out and 2nd becomes unusable. I rode around for a good year with no 2nd gear till forth shattered.
You basically have only one option. Split the engine apart and remove the trans and have it sent to Robertsons. There are multiple issues that they fix including a bilit 4th gear. The quotes me about a grand if I sent it to them.

Yeah thanks . I may call it and punt the ball on this one . Just out of curiosity, you mean they will do all the work if you ship the whole motor to them? What's the shipping on something that size?

No. That was just for the work on the trans. They back cut the dogs for better holding engagement, they cut the ring clip groves deeper, replace damaged forks, and a billet 4th gear and inspect and repair any other damage. Splitting the engine seems easy enough. All your doing is taking the bottom end apart.
Let me rephrase that... It's a lot of work but they said there shop rate was not cheap, my guess is $120-$150/h and it's probably 4 hours to split the case and assemble for a pro shop. Plus $250 for shipping a pallet fright. Plus your time. My guess would be $2500 -$3000 all on if you sent them a pallet with your engine.

There is no such thing as a 2006 Rocket 3. It is a III - a different model, albeit a very large engine.
