Well, I'm committed now........bought myself some mandrel bent tubing and then hacked off the LH connector pipe. (I plan to re-use this portion of the setup) I already knew the inlet was a restriction, but I had no idea what the inlet did inside the box. After the LH pipe was amputated I was able to look in and see the whole picture. As you can see from the pics, the inlet tube simply ends below the LH outlet and from there exhaust has to find its way out with no real direction at all. I have looked at the Cat box from some of the other bikes, but I think the touring setup is even worse (if that is possible)

It looks to me as if it is not a true cat box just an exhaust restrictor that makes the exhaust go its own way to find the openings to the rear. This must quiet it down a wee bit for EPA standards as it slows it down mqaking the gases bounce around of eachother until they find the exit. Just my opinion though. I see why so much is gained buy eliminating it and just adding a cross over pipe.

That does pretty much describe what must be going on inside that box,,especially at higher throttle openings. The touring (as far as I know) always had the cats in the front of the mufflers, so the crossover box is just an empty can with bad flow characteristics. My R3T already had the D&D setup on it so I never had any cats to get rid of. I'm still laying it out and trying to get the angles right, but I'll post the final result before I put it back on the bike.
