Time for a new rear tire, car tire or bike tire ?

I failed my motorcycle road course test at the DMV trying to get my motorcycle license. I had a motorcycle tire on the rear. If I had a car tire on the back I would probably have dropped my bike. I didn't realize the course was so tight. Knowing how the car tire behaves it would be impossible to even think about doing the course with one.

Depends mate...are you fitting the tyre to a car or motorbike. Then again you can install a jacuzzi on it if you like but not sure it will help it be the best bke it can be

More censorship???

Someone above said, and I've been told before, that there's no such thing as a "car" tyre. Given that the Dark Side is something to do with Star Wars I'm at a loss to understand what it is we're not supposed to talk about in a thread where the OP sought advice on tyres for his Rocket.

Don't really think your idea of a "safe zone" is going to work, amigo. Are we going have other safe zones? Anything I post for example? Unless people are going to agree with something I post, they cannot comment? Don't think a public discussion forum works that way mate.

There is a clause within every insurers policy stating that a vehicle (that means bike, car, truck or anything that is registered for road use) MUST be in a roadworthy state. Local state laws also stipulate the terms of what constitutes a road worthy tire of which one element is the manufacturers recognition of a suitable tyre, correct size, speed ratings, load ratings etc. This can be elaborated but suffice to say that a car tyre does not meat any Australian state or territory law as a roadworthy item on a motorcycle.

Stop making sense mate, you are going to stir the pot..and .... you are not allowed to have your opinion if you disagree with a fckin pain in the arse member so SHHHHHH

How fckin dare you have an opinion and make it public!!!!!!!! I am furious!!!! I have been told that I should disagree with you and follow some cockheads opinion of you unless I have an issued man card for some retarded fkin twit with a full of sht opinion - (no disrespect to any retarded people, I'd hate to put you on the same category of some twits that post sht on public forums).

Now you guys that don't agree with everyone and make well informed, educated, knowledgable, sensible and factually based decisions, STOP IT!!! Just stop posting..appaerently there are a minority of fcknuts that are the only ones that are allowed to answer a question.

Can anybody explain why I only see the posts of 20 people after I hit the ignore button on every scumbag that posts?

Sometimes you get stung, but hey, it's just hanging there asking for it! I love car tire threads!

yawn...another darkside thread...more bullsh!t from both sides. So here's more from me.

What type of rider are you, OpenRoad? One post said mostly interstates. IMHO, that makes you suitable for running darkside.

Are the beads different between car tire and m/c tire. Yes. Does it matter with the loading, power, longevity, etc? No. Of the millions and millions of miles that have been run on darkside on various m/c's, have you EVER had a documented, validated case of an issue with the beads? I haven't. Can you create an issue in a laboratory setting? Sure.

In the USA, we have the Magnuson-Moss Act which prevents manufactures from voiding your warranties if you make modifications to your vehicle. Fitting a car tire is treated the same way as fitting triple K&N's.

Insurance companies are insurance companies. My neighbor is an AllState agent and is also a high mileage Goldwing rider. He sees no issue with running a car tire from an insurance standpoint.

Discussions about running on sidewalls is more about the riding style of the person commenting. They are not suitable candidates for the darkside. I have over 40k miles running darkside and have never been up on a sidewall. Not my style.

Discussions about contact patch are usually just wrong. The illusion of thread lifted off the pavement masks the reality that there's still a tremendous amount of thread still on the pavement.

Here's my advice if you are considering darkside:

  • Start with a 225/55-16. It is still plenty beefy and minimizes the camber affects. A 245 is just too much, imho.
  • Again, imho, most satisfied darksiders have mounted the Riken Raptor ZR. There are a few other good options but also some less than optimal options.
  • Give it time after mounting. The first 100 miles will be "wtf did I do?" The next few hundred will be "this ain't so bad." From then on it's "yippee!!"
For the record, I got 29k miles out of my first Riken. $85 and $20 to mount. Lasted 3 years. Below is the old vs the new.

Plenty beefy in the 225/55.
