I am on a Riken Raptor now and it works well. However, it is probably the tightest tyre that I have put on the rim - it is the only one that I could not put on at home with tyre levers. The local chap did it for $20 so all is well. It is either my 5th or 6th DS, with 100,000 miles on them total. The others also worked well for me.
As long as you get a high performance summer tyre, with a tread that is symmetrical across the centre line, you will have no problems, unless you ride in sub-freezing temperatures. I did try a four season high performance tyre to cover the winter riding - it had different compounds in the centre and outside - but it wore out in the middle long before the edges.
Just ordered a Riken Raptor 225/55 ZR16. First 2 rear tires didn't last very long. 5500 on the original Metz, and 7500 on the Bridgestone Exedra Max. It's time to get a tire that might last a few miles. Before the naysayers rise up to warn me of how I will die in a fiery crash.... This will be my 4th motorcycle that will go DS. I know how they handle.
Mate, I think you'll find that no one could give 2 tosses what tyre you run. Put chiseled stone on there for all I care. Be as happy as you like. Just don't start saying it's better or safer than a motorcycle tyre.
I don't know about safer, but I can say it's better for my personal use in my personal opinion.
Safer would be to drive a Sherman tank. I could have used one on the way to Florida last week when the semi ran me off the interstate in the rain. It would have been nice to have a large caliber projectile to fire at him.
The day somebody makes a M/C tyre that is Z rated and will last 10,000miles for the R3's rim - I'd go back to M/C like a shot. But the prospect of HAVING to find and swap tyres midway though a holiday is enough to keep me practising the Dark Arts.
The Raptor is not available here - At the swap my current choice would be a Uniroyal rain tyre as the Goodyear I have on is no longer available. They're known for gripping in wet and snow/ice - but don't maybe last quite as long as other CT's.
