What surprised me was the shaking in Bangkok which was 600 miles from the epicenter. It was a pretty shallow quake (10km) so that may be the reason it was felt over such a wide area.

Yep me too!
The quake was actually in Burma (Myanmar) far from Bangkok and still in a major civil war for the [past 4-6 years. Looks like 10,000+ expected deaths in Myanmar.
Thailand is not usually affected by earthquakes and their construction methods do not usually have high earthquake resistance.

20 years ago, the big Xmas tsunami from a 9.3 quake near Aceh, Indonesia struck.
I was on a 12 hour day shift @ 11.00am Boxing Day 26/12/04 in a National 24/7/365 watch office for Transport Security at the time and the first reports of deaths were under 50,.
I said to my Superviosr that with the known cause of the tsunami I thought it would quickly climb to the 100,000's and was proven correct over the next few weeks/months when it topped 227,898.
