Tamper Proof ECU's

I'm with Scott on this - WHY CHANGE?.
There is enough electro-m'larky on the 2009 and younger - who the hell wants more?
Note that ABS bikes are more restrictive if you want to muck about with tyre sizes too.
A paint job is cheap if you want the stripes.

It seems the EU restrictions have been rescinded regarding LARGE bikes.

But that's no reason to suggest that Triumph (like others) wont do so anyway. They already have on other bikes. And other marques are doing so.
It's good for their dealer network.

Keep an eye on the TuneECU site. Alain seems to have ready access to data - and quickly says if an ECU will lock up if tampered with.

imo the only way to "tune" soon will be piggy-back systems - In general these are easy to spot esp after accidents - when insurance companies want a way out of paying up.

I have a 2013 R3R I bought new and got straight from the Triumph factory this month, I have so far tried connecting tuneECU and can get all the diagnostics and can save the maps off the bike to hex file etc...I've not tried to upload any changes yet....only just had the first service...but the app looks to be capable still (I also use TuneECU on my KTM)

I guess I could try adjusting the upper speed limit value or similar, but it's so bloody new I am a little reluctant to in all honesty, and I really have no need to change anyway...atleast not until the warranty is over and I start modding it proper with custom this and that. But that's 2 years off....

The latest version of TuneECU works just fine with 2013 R3 maps.

The only Keihin ECU bikes that I KNOW will not allow you to download a map into the ECU without locking are the Tiger 800, the latest 675 models, and the KTM 690 DUKE 4.

According to Alain

    addendum dec.25.2012

!!! Never connect TuneECU with these models !!!

That is good news

I might even be tempted to try an upload at some point now...

thanks for all the input! nothing wrong with my 08, its phantom black, 20,000 miles, and looks better than when I bought it in 09, I like the look of the new black w red stripes, also like the ABS and new gauges.

For what it's worth, I contacted Carpenter's racing about the ECU issue. They use Tuneboy to tune their custom setups. I was told that Tuneboy can get around any ECU restrictions regardless of year.

On R3's - yup - but so will Tune ECU. Because up 'til now the R3 has "tuneable ECU's"

The new Tamper proof ECU's are VERY different.
From what I've been told - Basically 2 ECU's in one box. One is basically like a firewall on a PC.
If it detects any NON-AUTHORISED device - it blocks - permanently.
And if you block one - it has to return to factory - dealers cannot reset. Chargeable.

The tech manager at the dealership I bought my R3 from, runs an older street triple. He uses TuneECU to modify it.
He's seen what happens on the new ones with TuneECU and TuneBoy at a new product training course.
As it was me who told him about TuneECU, he called to tell me to be careful when I mailed them about the new Trophy.

Yeah, both TuneECU and Tuneboy are unauthorised apps that connect to the same type of device/interface, it figures that they'll both be affected the same way by tamperproof stuff.

Sounds scary the new ECUs though, would they lock on simply reading do you know? Or is it just when trying to upload data?

We're definately lucky with the Rocket not being fitted with one!

not sure if it will stop PCV as the PCV does not actually change the ECU Mapping just modifies the info before it gets to the injectors

Piggy back sutch as pcv etc would be fine u just cant access and alter data on the eom ecu
