So - Quick Tach question.

I have a 2005 R3. Tach stopped working (just stuck at 5k all the time. No sweep, no nothing). I took to the dealer and they put a new one in, but it still isn't working correctly. Instead of being stuck at 5k, it now sweeps from 5k to 7k when the key is in, and when the bike is running the tach acts like the 5-7k range is the entire thing. They plugged the old one back in just to test it, and it still does nothing at all (stuck at 5k).

They double-checked the connections to the ECU, sprayed them with grease, etc... They're stumped - any thoughts? Have any of you run into this kind of thing?

Mine used to do that once in a while. The indicator lights in the tach would also stop working, or rather be stuck in whatever state they were in (on or off). If I disconnected the battery momentarily the lights would at least fix. Most times the tach would come back after the bike switched off for a period. Sometimes it took over night and one time it was days. Only happened a handful of times and hasn't done it for 2 years, roughly since I bridged the white wire across the ignition connector block under the front of the tank. No idea though if that had anything to do with it or is just coincidence.

Here's my post from 4 1/2 years ago.

Try disconnecting the battery, and then touch the +ve and -ve cables together - obviously separated from, and without touching, the battery. This will bleed out any electrons stuck in the circuit (a bit more technical than that) and may reset it to work correctly.

The update kit supplied a new connector just for the Tachometer which separated it from the rest of the gauge harness. You might have a corroded connection as the original harness plugs did not have much in the way of water tight integrity. You might want to clean all of the harness pins and then silicone the back side of each plug so no more moisture gets in the bugger.

Just got off the phone with the techs - they have an R3 in stock with the same type of tach. They've gone over the electrical system with the Triumph factory on the line and they're starting to think they were shipped a defective unit, so they're going to plug in the tach from the R3 that they know works. At least that way it narrows it down somewhat.

It wouldn't be the first time I've gotten a defective replacement part. #sigh
